The exercise at the end of chapter 6 says to write a poem about an object or anything of interest to you without using any adjectives until the last line, in which you use three in a row: I wrote about the city:
A Matter of Importance
One Halloween
walking home from a party
my friend was drunk enough
to let his pants drift
around his ankles
for several blocks.
We giggled until
a cop car rounded the corner -
stopped dead on the sidewalk
we were certain
the cruiser headed toward us
meant we were headed
for M.I.P.'s or worse -
And then
to our immense relief,
it didn't even slow
"What's more important?
A guy with his ass out
or a murder downtown?"
We laughed to tears
and then the laughter turned nervous.
We walked a little faster,
a little closer together,
the city looming around us,
dark and cold and hungry
