A few days ago I had been walking around the various shops of downtown Wausau and buying a few of the things I wanted I stopped by one of the downtown bars and ordered myself a cocktail. Gin and sour. I'm not one to normally do this, but the weather was nice and a drink sounded too good to pass up. As I sat at the bar I called one of my friends to see if he wanted to stop down. "Lets make a night of getting drunk." I said. After the conversation was over and I had ordered a second drink a man and a woman came in and sat at the corner of the bar which was a few stools down from where I was. It was clear that by how they interacted that the bartender and the gentleman knew one another. A few minutes into their conversation the one drinking said to the other man. And this is verbatem. "Fucking retards shouldn't be allowed out in public!" Then he proceded to hold his arm against his chest and pretend as though he himself had some form of retardation. Had I had another drink in me, or two, I would have asked the man this question. "At some point in your life have you ever put on a mask, a different face, to try and impress your friends, or, a woman?" Had I asked and had it been an honest answer he would have said "Yes." Then I would have inquired, "Do you want to be happy?" Honest or not I imagine I would have gotten the same response. "Yes." "So then..." I would have continued. "...This person you are making fun of wants exactly the same thing as you do. To be happy. Only he can't hide who he is the way you and I can." I would have paused here for another drink and then I would have finished with this. "So tell me then. Who is the one one that's truly retaded?" If only I had had another drink. If only I hadn't cowered away from what I wanted to say. Instead I am saying it here in the safety of anonimity. If only...
