Lately I have been walking about with an empty cranium (head). I screwed up my doctors appointments many times. I either arrived late, too early, wrong day or missed it completely. I write them down but somehow it just don't register and I mess up.
Yesterday, I went to the supermarket. I finish my shopping and got checked out when it was time to pay the cashier, which only accepts cash, personal checks or ATM debit card. I could not find my ATM card! I had taken out my check book out of my wallet because I never use it while shopping. I had about $38.00 in bills with me, not enough the bill was $68.00 and some change. I looked in my pocketbook which is an endless pit of stuff. No ATM card! Meanwhile , the waiting line behind me is growing. One one behind me asked the cashier if I was short in cash. I guess she wanted to help but the bill was around $68.00.
I tried really hard not to panic or get flustered. Since I am a regular and some of the cashiers know me I was advice that the bill would be put on hold until I came up with the cash, same day. I move out of the line and parked my grocery cart. I stood over my grocery cart and search my bag empty all contents in a box lid I got nearby. I was not in the way of anyone who wanted to exit the store or pass by me. Iempty my pocketbook did a complete search. No card, no personal checks! I collected every cent I found. I went to my car to see if my card had fallen out of my purse. No card. I collected any money in my car usually currency. I came up with $48.00 dollars in bills and currency. When the cashiers line clear up, I asked the cashier if I can put somethings back and get the bill down to $48.00 she was nice enough and she closed the line and we got to it.
There were 2 girls at that register. The one that checked me out was very nice the other one was a bit of a grump and stone face. I gave all the cash plus all the currency. There it was my life laid out on the conveyer belt. They both started counted the currency. The nice one could not get her math right. The other one counted and recounted. I wanted to do it myself but I dare not make a move that will ticked off the not so nice girl. So, I waited patiently until they finally decided they counted the right amount and check me out.
I apologized a lot and I just did not know what else I could do. I needed my groceries for I was out of just about everything at home. I knew I was a nuisance and a pest. I just felt like an idiot. That was a humbling experience for me. The funny thing is that I had another small pocketbook inside the trunk of my car that I did not see when I went searching among all the articles in my car and I didn't even need to give them currency. I had several dollars that would have paid the bill. I went home and search for my ATM card and found it in my coat pocket that I had worned previously when I went to get gas in my car.
