 Fear verses Repentance
The scenario:  Two witnesses appear in Jerusalem are to bear witness to the Jews and the Gentiles, (the non-Jews).  These two witnesses are prophets of God.  These events recorded here have never taken place, but they will occur in "the holy city" at the end of the age.  When their assigned work given to them by God is finished they will be killed by the beast that comes up (meaning from below) out of the abyss.  This beast makes war upon the two Prophets of God and kills them.

Questions:  Who are the two witnesses?   What is this abyss or where is this abyss located?   Who is the beast or what is the beast?

These two prophets of God are given supernatural powers used to defend themselves from the beast that rages war upon them.  When their God given job is done, the powers I supposed will be removed and the beast is able to killing them.  Their bodies are placed in the street of this city, (Jerusalem) and from all over the earth men (men & women), look upon them for three and half days.  It is possible for godless people from all over the word to look at the two slain witnesses, I think due to television.  The news media like CNN will probably broadcast images of these two intensely hated prophets of God.

There will be universal rejoicing over their death by the godless of that period of time upon the earth.  Thinking that these two witnesses are dead they are astonished when God raises them to their feet and calls them to glory, which they do go to heaven.

At their ascension (going up) of the two now resurrected witnesses into heaven, Jerusalem suffers a great earthquake, (this earthquake must be high on the richter scale).  Seven thousand people are killed.  Now, the godless people are scared to death and give glory to God.  But there is not repentance or conviction of their sins.  In other words, the do not recognized, nor accept Jesus Christ as the Son of God nor do they believe that he paid the price of their salvation by his death on the cross.  This is only a mimic behavior.  Their giving glory to God is lip service and soon enough the fear passes and they reveal their own unchanged spirituality.

So, in other words, giving praises to God because of been afraid of going to hell when death comes upon you is the same as those who gave praise to God when fear overcame them during the great earthquake.  It will not get you into heaven, because their is no change of heart, no real repentance, no asking God for forgiveness, no belief nor faith in the word of God.  This person have not change at all and remains an unbeliever in his/her heart.
