Many psychiatrist believe that one of the causes or at least an exacerbation of the depression is negative, pessimistic thinking which creates low self-esteem. Watch your self talk, your words, what thoughts you have about yourself. Challenge those thoughts. Write them out to see if they come often, or is there a pattern to that kind of negative thinking according to events that happened in your life.
Another way to find the source of your depression is to examine your life. Sit down and write what has happened in your life lately that cause your emotions to swing into the blues. Are you prone to depression? What have you been doing? What do you eat or drink. Are you eating too much or not enough? Are you taking vitamins? Have you had any accidents or sicknesses lately? This will include anything that caused you to be upset about it. Don't discard minor occurances because too many of them amount to a bigger count.
What have you been thinking. Runaway thinking can be a cause for depression. That is when your mind keeps talking and don't shut up. Write out what comes to your mind, don't try to refrase it, write it the way it comes to your mind. Having a journal is a good way to keep tract of your day to day thoughts activity. You will see at the end when you read it later how you think, react, feel, about things that happen in your life. Are you prone to self condemnation? That is, do you feel guilty a lot or feel like you cannot handle any crisis and dread the future.
Diseases can cause depression. Here are some of the most common ones: asthma, anemia, cancer, malnutrition, premenstrual syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, congestive heart failure, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, infectious hepatitis, ulcerative colitis, multiple sclerosis, chronic infections. Low thyroid function is a cause of depression. A some person in our population suffer from low thyroid function called hypothyroidism. Now, don't comfuse (Hypo with Hyper) they sound alike but are very different. Signs and symptoms of hypothyroidism: weakness, dry skin, coarse skin, lethargy, slow speech, sensitivity to cold temperature, thick tongue, impaired memory, constipation, gain in weight despite little or no appetite, difficulty in losing weight, loss or thinning of hair, muscle pain, joint pain, slowing of mental activity, choking sensations.

What is positive? Appropriate self-talk can lift us out of depression. Medical care to determine if your depression comes from a source of sickness like hypothyroidism. For many women can be hormonal disfunction. Women need to learn and find out about their hormones.
There is another very common cause for depression: It is called : Spiritual Depression
It is a malaise that seems to be upon many people from time to time when they feel "cut off" or "far away" from God. While in it they have no enthusiasm for God's Word. They seem "weary in well doing." They seem ready to collapse under persecution.
They sound like the Psalmist when he states, "Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me" (Psalm 42:5). He repeats this refrain over and over. He says his soul thirsts for God (42:2) like a deer longs for water (v.1). He acknowledges that he is in mourning (v.9) and that "deep calls to deep at the sound of thy waterfalls; All thy breakers and thy waves have rolled over me." (v. 7). It is almost as though things are too hard to bear.
There is hope, and the sun will shine, this will get better and your life will be a happier life if you get help and understand that you are not alone and that is not a drastic illness but a manageable illness or episode. The more you know the better it is for you to handle it. Be strong in the Lord and in the power of his might.
"I cry to the Lord; I call and call to him. Oh, that he would listen. I am in deep trouble and need his help so much. All night long I pray, lifting my hands to heaven, pleading. There can be no joy for me until he acts. I cannot sleep until you act. I am too distress even to pray!
I keep thinking of the good old days of the past. long since ended. O God, your ways are holy. Where is there any other as mighty as you? You are the God of miracles and wonders! You still demostrate your awesome power." Bible Psalms 77 & 78
