What is Atomic Power? It refers to the energy that is released when atoms of matter are split. Albert Einstein, in 1905, showed mathematically in his Theory of Relativity that matter could be changed into energy, that is has energy in it. The famous formula E = mc2 showed how much energy could be released.
Since 1945, atomic energy was represented as the miraculous future energy source in USA and most of the world. Giant reactors in our own town, the 3 Mile Island in PA, made us aware of the problems and relaxed attitude of employees in power plants. A combination of equipment malfunctions and human error led to a loss of coolant. It remains the most significant accident on record at a U.S. nuclear power plant. Their license expire on April 19, 2014.
In Oct. of 1945, Truman urged Congress to establish an Atomic Energy Commission to run all atomic programs, from bomb production to medical uses and research. In 1946 the Atomic Energy Act was established a " five man" Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) to be appointed by the President for five-year terms, with the advice and consent of the Senate.
Cover ups, denials, reckeless endangerments, illegal dumping of radioative waste, fall out controversy, near catastrophics deadly nuclear accident involving melting fuel rods. Not long ago one employeed was caught sleeping on the job.
