Do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it's God's throne; "nor by the earth" for it is his foostool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King. But let your 'Yes' , be 'Yes' and your 'No', be 'No.' For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.

It is very common today to use the name of God in making an oath. However we must remember that one of the Lord's commandments is that we should not use the name of the Lord in vain. So it is sinful to use God's name for an oath and God will not let that sin go by without reprimand.
To use the name of God in swearing or for whatever reason is called 'Blaspheming. I have to remind myself and my kids all the time not to use his name vainly. Today you hear his name used vainly everywhere without reverance. We are a generation of blasphemers. I have to ask God to forgive me when ever I do it. I don't mean to do it, but it happens now and then. God have mercy upon my sinful spirit and help me to stop it completely.
