I was at Peach Fuzz’s apartment the other night and three of us were intently watching Amelie and I saw a shadow flash past in the corner of my eye. I have learnt to ignore these shadows and put it down to my imagination but the dog (Jagger) was going crazy. He barked and whined. I saw the shadow again but didn’t say anything to the boys as it might alarm them, but then I saw a brief flash of the shadow again. Jagger kept barking and whining and Peach Fuzz made a comment that he has never seen Jagger like this before. I was a little uncomfortable I was feeling something was in the room with us but still didn’t say anything.

I couldn’t concentrate on the movie any longer so I told the boys about the shadow that I saw, Peach Fuzz went down stairs to check to see if the place has been broken into, he found that the door wasn’t locked but nothing was out of order. He pretended to get hurt done stairs to scare me, what an idiot! While Chris went in his room to hide so that Peach Fuzz can scare me. Oh god, the maturity!

Ignore the stupidness of Peach Fuzz and Chris. The point is, where do these shadows come from? Am I imagining them? No one else seems to sees or notices them. I don’t know what to think??? Is it all in my mind?

I have to say that this is not the first it’s happened…

Has anyone else had similar experiences? I would really like to know.

One of my New Year's resolutions this year was to inspire 4 people and to be inspired (it's one of the items in the To-Do-List) and so two very special people have come into my life. I have come across many many wonderful friends and have shared amazing experiences with some but I am only starting to notice that some have major influences on my perception of life.

Around 12 months ago, I met Tamiko at a local sushi bar, she looked preoccupied and in her own little world, at the same time there was something really intriguing about her. Her hair was long and curly and her straight posture made her elegant frame more distinctive. I sat down next to her and started a conversation, I know it's weird to approach strangers and start having deep and meaningful talks with them but we almost had an instant connection. From then onwards, she and I would meet up regularly to catch up and to get to know each other further. We would constantly talk about pursuing our dreams, living for the moment, being happy and present to our current surroundings. I guess this may have played a part in her decision making process. She told me that those talks really made her take a leap of faith to quit her secure job as a fashion designer, to pursue her creative and daring quest of developing her hand made designer candle business. I was ecstatic that I have inspired someone but at the same time I was worried.

I have to say that when she told me that she resigned from her full time job I was stunned and felt partly responsible for her motivation to enter a life of very little financial security (for the time being). The whole time that she was telling me about her plans I felt so responsible for what she has done and negative thoughts like: Will she blame me if things don’t go well? What happens if…? After seeing how passionate she is about her business, I knew that she would succeed regardless of what happens, even if the final result is that she has an amazing leadership and maturity journey.

I still remember the last time I met her which was last month; I starred at her in wonder. I haven’t seen her so excited, we were totally absorbed in our conversations about plans for the future. I felt so unmotivated and lazy. How many ideas and dreams have I come up with and promised myself that I would pursue it and it never eventuated because I was distracted? Her excitement was extremely contagious and at that moment I felt really motivated and ready to go, I haven’t felt this way in a long time. I must ensure I do what I set out to do…To-Do-List, here I come.

At the beginning of the year I met a lady on one of the hikes, let’s call her Minty Fresh and during the hikes we would exchange knowing glances of the silliness that goes on in the group. We constantly giggle over things that were not amusing to other people and we humour each other through those walks. Occasionally, we would met up during the week and have dinner or sit in a café, talk for hours and forget about the time. She’s really funny and has a heart of gold. She is genuine and is straight forward with what she tells you. I admire that. I respect her for her thirst to learn and her humility is refreshing. What impressed me the most about her is that she is able to walk away from things that make her unhappy regardless how uncertain the path in front of her is. Even though her delicate frame and easy smile can mislead you to think that she has had a typical American upbringing, her stories and her strength will speak otherwise.

She has recently taken some of my recommendations on board to write some of her experiences down on paper and maybe consider sharing her story to other women that have gone through the same thing. Encouragement is the least I can do; she inspires me to be a stronger person.

I remember one time we were sitting in a Thai Restaurant, she told me about her family and the journey that has taken her to where she is today. I don’t think I have listened that carefully in the past, I didn’t want to miss one detail of her upbringing, her story was touching and it tugged my cynical heart strings. I was silent. I had nothing to offer her other than my compassionate ears and I think that’s all she was after.

Having heard Minty Fresh’s story I felt shameful for ever complaining about my life. I am extremely lucky in comparison, there really isn’t any excuse for me not to chase what my heart desires, and I don’t have the obstacles that she has encountered. I felt embarrassed that a few moments before I complained about my trivial problems regarding my parents. At that moment of clarity, I realized how much I put myself in a position of a helpless victim. I must stop making excuses and achieve what I set out to do.

Last week Thursday, Matt (a guy a met during a white water kayaking trip) came over to my place to watch “Dead Poet’s Society”. We were walking in Piedmont park and we were talking about making the most of everything the pressures from our families to conform to what society thinks is right for us. I brought up the movie and Matt hasn’t seen it. Now, I would like to ask who hasn’t seen it? I mean everyone I know has seen the movie!!! Anyways so we went back to my place to watch it.

I cried a little bit at the end. I always do, I can really relate to the movie, it inspired me to stand up to the parents and made sure that I did what set out to do and not allow them to think what is best for me. Now more and ever I know that they loved me dearly and only wanted the best for me but I need to do what is right for me and make my own mistakes and follow my dreams. I remember the first time I watched it scared me because I could see myself ending up the same way if I didn’t do something about following my dreams and overcoming the pressure that was put on me to achieve academically. I totally understand everything that the main character went through…it was hard but it was harder live someone else’s dream.

Amazing friendships are hard to come by and I am so glad to have met Matt, because we connect as humans and we have fundamentally the same values. I am so excited by our new found bond and mateship.

I hope that we share many more special and meaningful moments like the ones experienced last week. This is what life is about - sharing special moments.

4th July, 2008

The 4th of July was Independence Day in the US and it being a public holiday the long weekend was a perfect opportunity to go exploring in the neighbouring states. A group on MeetUp was organizing to go to Florida for a 3 night and 4 day car camping trip.

I came over to Reagan’s house to carpool and pack the car. I was so surprised by how little she took with her for food. I think she had some hotdogs (staple American diet) and Philadelphia cream cheese and that was pretty much it. I was a bit embarrassed by what I brought and tried to put the stuff in her car asap so she wouldn’t see it.

Falling Waters State Park

There were 7 of us that drove from Atlanta to Florida on Thursday night after work and set up camp. The only person I know in the group was Reagan (whom I met in my caving and spelunking expedition) and I didn’t know the rest of the group so I was a bit nervous about camping with people I never met before. John built a campfire and sat around getting to know each other. I brought some purple yams and we cooked them in the campfire, it tasted amazing and everyone liked it!

We were all pretty tired from the 4 hour drive and so we hang out a little before we got told off by our neighbour that we were too loud. An old and cranky man came by and told us what he thought of our laughing and talking. We made fun of him and kept laughing as we did. Come on people, it’s a public holiday and it’s not even midnight! We went to bed shortly after that.

In the morning we woke up early, ate breakfast and went to the Florida Caverns and did a short hike through the area. We then went to a natural spring to swim and snorkel. The water was too cold to snorkel but we all went into the water to relax.

The water was crystal clear and was extremely refreshing as it was so cold I couldn’t stay underwater for long.

That evening it rained cat and dogs, we all huddled in the larger tent and swapped food and played cards. There was a lot of silly talk and laughter, it was incredibly entertaining.

Panama City Beach

The next day we drove for around 1.5 hours to Panama Beach and had lunch together then we hit Panama City Beach. The area was very touristy and crowded. There are condos, hotels and tourist attractions everywhere.

The water was full of algae and was too murky to snorkel, we tried but it was useless. The water was nice and warm and it was relaxing to just lie back and look at the blue blue sky.
St. Joseph Peninsula Beach

We arrived at St. Joseph’s Peninsula beach around 5ish and we immediately set up camp before it got dark. As soon as we finished setting up the tent we went to the beach to snorkel. The snorkeling was so much fun even though we didn’t find anything in the water, I enjoyed swimming around and just floating in the warm Florida water. As I was floating around looking for fish, I came up for a breath and didn’t see anyone in the water, they were all on the shore looking extremely concerned. A couple of our camping mates were stung by jelly fishes…I quickly got out of the water as I saw a couple in the water but thought they were harmless.

That night we again cooked our dinners in the campfire and all sat around just enjoying our beautiful surroundings. Some of us decided to go down to the beach to look at the stars and maybe stumble upon nesting turtles. We were ASTOUNDED by the number of stars that were visible that night. It was so beautiful, I have forgotten how magical the outdoors can be. We sat on the beach singing corny songs that we knew and as John played his harmonica I couldn’t keep the smile off my face. This is what life is all about. Even though initially I didn’t know any of the people that went on the trip other than Reagan I now feel so much closer to everyone. We all lay on your backs till the wee hours of the morning listening to the gentle waves, enjoying the gentle breeze, searching for shooting stars and sharing stories. I was so happy to be alive.

I am going to make sure I get all the gear I need to continue to hike and camp in the outdoors. Life is too short to waste on competing with others material objects, bigger houses and larger saving accounts…I must remember that. All of life’s beauty is easily forgotten with our much enlarged egos and lust for what is not ours.

1st July 2008

The last couple of months have been filled with many memorable events and I can’t remember ever being so relaxed and happy in my life. I think it’s going to be a period of my life that I will look back and think of fondly. The food I eat is healthy, I am active and have something on pretty much every night of the week and I am meeting new people all the time, thanks to the social activities that I get involved in.

Here are some of the highlights of the events that have happened the last couple of months.

Yatch Rock

The area I live in is well known for its relaxed bars, restaurants, clubs and shops. Just imagine a smaller version of South Yarra. There are quite a number of young professionals in the area and the crowd is a bit more relaxed than other areas in Atlanta.
Emily has recently exposed me to a local band that plays “Yatch Rock”; they play and dress up like they are from the 70’s. It’s a fun night out and the crowd just goes crazy. I tend to stand in the front, supporting my favourite local band.

Salsa Jam

Dancing has always fascinated me and I would watch from afar, I remember having Meringue and Street Latin classes in Uni with Lisa but all is forgotten ever since because we didn’t practice it afterwards. Recently a group organized salsa dancing classes and I registered. For some reason I was partnered up with a guy that was twice as tall as me (6’5’), it was hilarious. The class found it hard to concentrate because they were too busy laughing at us. These photos are priceless.

The dance classes went for an hour and we continued to practice our moves with people that regularly come to the place to dance. I got extremely hungry from all the dancing and for those that know me well, I eat a lot for someone my size and I had a whole heap of watermelon and pineapple. I left the used toothpicks on the table not knowing where the bin was and I stood next to the food table enjoying the atmosphere and there I see Brian using my used toothpicks to eat the food. Before I could say anything it was too late, I felt really bad and plucked up the courage (I think he used a few tooth picks by then) to tell him that the tooth picks he used was um…kinda of used by me already, poor thing. We laughed our heads off and so we tried to reenact the story. LOL.

Mountain Biking

I bought a mountain bike a few months ago and haven’t had the chance to ride it and so I joined a mountain biking group and finally headed out to Blanket Creek to ride. I rode the bike for the first time a few weeks ago around the neighbourhood and my butt was in pain for a week, it ached and it was hard to sit or sleep on my back. So I decided to buy a bigger seat with a lot of padding. I know that a lot of people laughed at me but as long as my butt is not bruised, I am happy. I rode on the easiest trial there was, it was flat and scenic, it got boring after a while so I might try the more advance trials next time. It’s a great sport because you sweat like crazy and it’s less impact on your joints.

I got a little cocky and wanted to push it a little and tried to climb a pretty large hump. I watched others ride really quickly to get over the hump and since they made it look really easy I wanted to try too. I rode as quickly as I could up the hump, but at the last minute I panicked and braked and of course flipped over backwards and fell to the ground. Due to a lack of the appropriate gear, my hands were scrapped and my whole body ached.

Bypassers came by to help, trying hard not to laugh. I am not sure what was more hurt, my ego or my butt.

A company I deal with had some spare baseball tickets and asked me to join them, Allan (who works with me) and Matt came along as well. Matt and I met during a white water kayaking trip with the outdoors club that we are both part of. We had an amazing time watching Philly beat the Atlanta Braves. Matt was being his suave self and flirted with a couple of 70 year old ladies sitting in front of us, there was a lot of leg touching going on that night. There was a lot giggling and I was high on the sugar that was in my Southern sweet tea.

I am still continuing with my tennis lessons and I am slowly making progress and I am so grateful for the opportunity to be able to do all sorts of things around Atlanta and love the lifestyle.

The newsletters are great in keeping in contact with everyone but it is also a wonderful way to keep track of all the things I have been up to the last 12 months. I am really going to look back at this time of my life in the future and it will put a smile on my face.
Hope to hear about your adventures as well.

Leaving Microsoft to Change the World

16th June 2008, Atlanta

Lisa recently finished reading a book called “Leaving Microsoft to Change the World” by John Wood and told me that it was one book I HAD to read. I have also finished reading the book and I am genuinely inspired to make a contribution. The world is full of people who needs are disadvantaged and will continue to live in poverty due to lack of education, ever since I was young my parents taught me that the way out of oppression and poverty was through education. Schooling and academic success was demanded from us at the time, I do not regret all the time I used to study to obtain my two degrees, there has been no regrets, even though I get paid the same amount as someone with one degree. If you look at it from a short term point of view it’s easy to see that the second degree may have been a waste of time however in the long run being able to understand the world in business and engineering terms will definitely help me further in my career also manage my personal finances.
Many of us do not use much of what has been taught in university but education is a process that gives you the basic tools to problem solve and think. These skills are critical and being able to think in systematic terms and break problems down to basic modules.

My degrees have taken me all around Australia, Vietnam and around the US. It has provided with opportunities to further my education in other areas and also provided the financial benefits that have enabled me to travel many places around the world. It is a skill that keeps on giving. I can’t imagine a life without it.

I think that if more people were educated in Asia and other poorer parts of the world the living standards in those countries would improve. It might mean that the richer countries will need to share a bit more of their wealth, but even distribution of wealth is not always a bad thing. People in the developed countries may need to live with less and learn to be happier with less material possession. Maybe this will help people that live in developed world to appreciate life more and there would be less distractions.

Having been surrounded by Asian girls in High School that did not always have education as one of their main priorities in life made me said, they did not dare to aim high. And I would one day like to offer tutoring and mentoring services to these kids so that they can dare to dream more and not be enticed by the coolness of selling drugs and going towards unproductive and destructive lifestyle.

I will aim to get back to Australia and promote room to read to my friends the people I know to raise funds for more schools in Vietnam and education opportunities for those that want to learn. I keep saying that I want to change the world but I am waiting for something significant to happen whereas I should be working towards. I have been distracted by boys, a drive for possessions and career and have forgotten the dream to make a difference to the world.

Must make a difference and be the change I wish to see in the world.

The World of Singledom

This Article was originally written by Melissa Ironside for Cleo Magazine but I loved it so much I am adapting it to include my point of view.

Putting it all in Perspective

If you thought being by yourself on a Friday night was depressing, spare one minute and think about our Medieval single sisters. If you didn’t pair up in, you were labeled a witch and burnt at the stake or drowned. The truth is there’s never been a better time to be young, free and unattached.

Go back just 20 years and women couldn’t even get a loan on their own, let alone earn the same wage as men. A few decades ago, women were expected to get married and rely on their husbands and now they’re encouraged to pursue a career where they can express and experience social, emotional and psychological fulfillment. This means they’re more financially stable than ever before.

So why is it that even though single women have never had reason to feel less desperate, our self esteem is plummeting at lightening speed? The reality is that it’s a personal pressure, not a social one. Does anyone look twice at singles these days? It all comes down to how you feel inside which is why throwing all your energy into the husband hunt, instead of into looking after yourself, leads to girls feeling inadequate.

On the other hand, you need to be a man hater or a boyfriend banner to boost self esteem, just be more picky about who you date! WHY? Because YOU can! You have a decent job and you can look after yourself so you can be selective in you choose to fall for. Any idiot can find a partner, but finding the right partner and not settling for less is the challenge.

Making the Most Out of Singledom

So how do you get to this happy place? Firstly, work out what’s dragging your single worlddown and ADDRESS it! Whether it’s family pressure to get married, a past relationship left unresolved, or smug coupled-up friends, just tell them their behaviour is not appreciated. You need to be open and honest with people because, nine times out of ten, they don’t realise they’re hurting your feelings.

Secondly, inject some spark into your career, health and education. Any guy will tell you that confidence is sexy, so work on yourself and you’ll attract more positive attention. Learning to be happy alone is crucial, if your not happy to be with YOU, who will?

Trying something new will also set you on the fast track to happiness. Whoever said ‘variety is the spice of life’ was a dead-set genius. Challenging yourself, trying new things and being spontaneous is a lot easier when you’re single. Make the most of it. There is no one to look after or accomodate so just follow your dreams and do what takes your fancy.

What To do?

Here are a few tips to making your life more interesting and you have better things to talk about than boys and marriage! Learn to ROCK your world.

The trip was filled with exciting events and some misfortunes a long the way and to fully share the experience, the trip info was separated by the each day.

As soon as head into the San Francisco from the airport, I instantly fall in love with the rolling hills, colourful houses and pristine water. Of all the American cities I have visited, San Francisco would have to be my favourite so far.

I hope you love San Francisco as much as I do.

DAY 1

Errin and I drove to the airport carpark and caught our planes from Atlanta to San Francisco, it took us 4 ½ hours, it sounds like a long flight but having to take 20 hour to and from Australia in the past this trip wasn’t so bad in comparison. The important thing to remember is that most domestic flights run by US airlines will not provide complimentary food, you need to purchase it. Airline food is never really great so come prepared.

We checked into our hotels and immediately headed out to explore the city, there was no time to be tired. I usually just have a visitor’s guide that either collect from the airport or have ordered online and then just wonder aimlessly until I am bored and then refer to the guide for ideas. I like to get lost and wander the streets and see how people in the city live, I usually always find really amazing things that are not mentioned in the guides and you avoid the crowd too.

We walked to China Town and had an authentic Chinese lunch. I ordered roast duck noodle soup and it was the best duck I have had in years. It was so good to eat genuine Chinese food once again. The market stalls were filled with Chinese vegetables, herbs, fresh fruits and produce. The atmosphere was buzzing with energy, this would have to be the best China Town I have been to so far in the US.

After lunch we walked to Japan Town and found a bunch of Japanese super markets, restaurants and people that looked Japanese. I wasn’t that all impressed with Japan Town as it lacked Japanese architecture and the atmosphere was pretty ordinary. Maybe they need to import a few more Japanese people to jazz the place up a little more.

The roads were hilly and the dramatic inclines were challenging and my legs were aching but I guess it’s good practice for the South America trip. I couldn’t stop looking at the bay views and the rolling roads and beautiful houses. We got lost a few times as our navigational skills were challenged from time to time. What I would do for a sense of direction, why does it come naturally to some and not to others?

The Victorian houses were well maintained and had the city as a back drop and it was also located idyllically across the park. It couldn’t anymore perfect. At this point we have walked around 3 hours, we relaxed and ate strawberries I bought from China Town. The sky was blue, the views were magnificent and the strawberries were delicious, life cannot get any better than this.

We then walked to the Golden Gate Park to see the Japanese Tea Garden but to our disappointment, the park was closed. We then caught the bus (using our highly advance “ask-the-locals” skills) back to the hotel and then caught a taxi to Peir 39 (Fisherman Wharf). Peir 39 is an area designed for tourists and boasts sea food restaurants, an aquarium, shops and live music. The atmosphere was sensational, even though it got really cold (relatively speaking for a summer’s day, it was 10oC) around the water, it was still really alive and there was a lot people out and about.

Errin was busy shopping for a jacket and I was busy browsing the food that was on offer. The food was a bit too plain for us so we decided to take a taxi back to Union Square where our hotel was located to eat. We went to a small and quant restaurant that the taxi driver recommended to us and found the food to be authentic and reasonably priced. The locals always know where to go.

It was around 12 am when we got back to the hotel and pretty much crashed. It has been a long day due to the 3 hour difference and early morning start to catch the early plane. I am so surprised we were able to stay awake for dinner. I like to sleep with sore muscles when I am traveling; it’s a reminder that I have had a fun filled day with lots of adventure.

DAY 2

I woke up really early to fit in a Yum Cha breakfast and also to catch my 9.30am much anticipated tour to Alcatraz. I walked around 7am in the morning in Central San Francisco, the sun was out fully and there were a number of early birds shopping and having yum cha.

As it was pretty early my yum cha session was cut short and I left for Pier 33 in good time to make sure I don’t miss the Alcatraz tour. One thing to note is that the Alcatraz tour must be booked in advance as they sell out very quickly. I didn’t know this until Jasmine randomly mentioned it to me last week, lucky for me I pretty much bought the last ticket on the day. Tourists from all over the world visit the infamous Alcatraz and its history is as compelling as its reputation. The view from Alcatraz was amazing and the history behind was really cool. Take a look at the Facebook link for more photos, I can’t fit them all in!

While waiting for Errin I visited the many busy seafood stalls around the fishermen's Wharf and bought myself some crab, it was beautiful! It is the freshest crab I have had since coming to America.

Errin has visited San Francisco a few years back and has toured Alcatraz in the past so she spent the morning shopping. We then met up at Pier 41 to rent a bike and ride around the peninsula. It took us in total of around 6 hours to complete the circuit but it was worth every bead of sweat and every tiny little sore muscle. It should only have taken us 4 hours but we kept getting lost and my lack of riding experience may have slowed us down. We cycled for 27 km, this was my first long distance bike ride ever, and I am hooked. I am going to make sure I ride as much as possible the next few months that I am in Atlanta. I am absolutely ecstatic of my achievement.

The first few miles was a pleasant ride, the views of the bays and the Golden Gate Bridge were breath taking. Here are some photos of the bike ride, remember the camera can’t capture of its beauty.

I remember back in the Uni days we would study the structure of bridges and we would in class we would discuss the Golden Gate Bridge and its structural mechanics. I would look at the photo of the Golden Gate Bridge with indifference, and at the time to me it was just something I probably won’t get a chance to ever see. And here I am riding my little rental bike over one of the most famous bridges in the world, while trying to remember how the stresses where distributed and where the momentum of the bridge was located. I felt so blessed.

We then rode further to Sausalito and had a late lunch. Sausalito is a very well to do area just outside of San Francisco and has fine dining and beautiful bay views. The occupiers are people that have made a lot of money during the dot com boom, as Silicon Valley is not so far away and I guess a lot of the money still remains in the area.

We could have caught the ferry back to the Fisherman’s Wharf but the views were so amazing I wanted to go further and see the rest of the track. Even though I can no longer feel my legs I knew that if I didn’t do it I would regret it. Who knows when I will be back right? So we rode to Tiburon. My lungs at that point were burning and my bum and leg muscles were sore, but like any other travel warriors, we rode on to make we don’t miss the last ferry heading back to the pier. Luckily we made good time and was early for the ferry and went to get coffee at a local restaurant, we started chatting to the friendly locals and found out the a house on top of a hill a few blocks from the restaurant recently sold for a measly $64 Million dollars! A small 1-2 bedroom apartment costs around $1-2 Million. Holy cow!

We were excited about our achievements and hopped onto the ferry with a click on our heels. We were tired beyond words and couldn’t wait to eat all the yummy food the city has got to offer, however as we were riding back to find the bike rental warehouse to return the bike Errin somehow along the way lost her wallet. We back tracked to the areas we rode on the Pier and asked all the restaurants, hotels and fish vendors but no one heard anything or saw a missing wallet. We spent the night further looking for the wallet and then went to the police station to get a police report so Errin can travel back to Atlanta. We cancelled all of her credit cards and did all the documentation to make sure airport security will allow her to board the plane.

We were exhausted from the emotional roller coaster and also from the physical demands of the day and collapsed into bed.

DAY 3

We had to get to the airport 2 hours early just in case Errin’s security check might take us longer as she has lost her ID. We wanted to see the Japanese Tea Garden and also Lombard St (being famous for its crookedness), so we woke up early and caught the bus Lombard St.

We then went to the Japanese Tea Garden and had a quick look around. We didn’t have the time to enjoy the tranquility or just sit there and watched the world go by. It’s a pity because it would have been so cool but we had a plane to catch.

Along the way somehow Errin managed to loose her Blackberry as well. I guess her mind was still with her wallet and didn’t pay attention. One very important thing with traveling is that, things will be lost and stolen, but remember to have a good time regardless, who knows when you’ll be back there? I have learnt from experience (from losing my camera in China) that worry and panicking will not make a difference it will only make it worst, so you might as well enjoy the rest of the trip.

The trip was way too short, I would have liked to go to the Napa valley and enjoy the countryside and also see the Yosemite area and even go hot air ballooning. If you’re visiting San Francisco remember to leave plenty of time for all the city has to offer.

After 12 months of being in the USA I have decided to move back to Melbourne!!! I have put a lot of thought into whether I should leave or stay and leaving seems like a better alternative for the time being. It was an extremely hard decision to make, as I have said in the past, the decision to leave Australia was not a hard one but the decision to stay in the US was one that took a lot of contemplation and thought. I am so grateful for the experience and will never forget all the places I gone to and the people that I met along the way. The trip was everything I hope it would be and I have learnt so much about myself and life the last 12 months. If I had the chance to do it all again, I wouldn’t do it any differently. I often wondered what my life would have been like if I choose to stay in Australia and didn’t go to the US? Would I have learnt the same lessons? Would l have met the same people? Would I be the same person and have the outlook on life I have now? I guess no one can really answer that question, but it’s so wonderful to know that there are so many choices available to us and having the freedom to chose, makes life that much more worthwhile.

I will finish work on the 14th of August and will fly to South America the next day. I will firstly fly to Argentina, Buenos Aires to join a tour, the tour finishes on the 1st of Sept in Brazil, Rio Janeiro. I then fly to Peru Lima on the 3rd of Sept and start another tour around Peru. In Peru, I will be hiking the infamous INCA TRAIL in Cusco. The ruins at Machu Picchu are world renown and are listed as one of the world’s wonders for ancient ruins. It is also listed as one of five best hikes in the world!!! The trial will take 4 days to complete and will cover around 84 kms on foot. The pictures really speak for themselves.

So I am working like a headless chook to get into shape and ensure that I will not have trouble hiking at altitude and get sick. So, there will be lots of exercise and healthy food for me in the next few months.

This weekend Errin and I are going to San Francisco together for the American public holiday, Memorial Weekend. I am sure it will be a memorable weekend that we will both remember for a long time. Hehehehehe. I can’t wait. Again I will take plenty of photos and provide you with an update.

It will be sad saying goodbyes once again to friends, but they are so excited about visiting me in Australia that I don’t think they mind that much.

Meanwhile, I have a lot to do and organize before the move happens. There is very little time to do everything, so I better get organized and not leave things to the last minute.

I still hike with the usual group every 2 weeks and jog nearly everyday to improve my fitness. I am also attending meditation classes once a week. All is well everyone, I am loving life and thanks to everyone that emailed me to update me on what’s happening back home.

Tamiko and I met by chance one evening when I went to a local sushi bar after work in Staten Island New York to get dinner. She was sitting at the bar and since I was traveling on my own and wanted to chat someone, I joined her. We started chatting and we had a wonderful time. It felt like have met before and that we have known each other for a long time. It might sound a little iffy meeting someone at a sushi bar but since living in the US I have grown accustom to meeting new people in all sorts of crazy places. You learn to let go of inhibitions when you are alone and the only way to make friends is to randomly speak to strangers. It empowers you to communicate more confidently and pushes you to get to know people you wouldn’t normally socialize with.

Tamiko was turning 35 and wanted to do it with a big bang, we she invited myself and a number of her girlfriends to come down to Miami to help her celebrate another year of a wonderful life. Like myself, Tamiko is about to start a new chapter in her life and wanted something to celebrate her decision. She resigned from her secure job at The Gap to pursue her own business in designer hand made wax candles.

I flew into Miami and met up with one of Tamiko’s girlfriends and shacked up with her. She had a spare bed in her hotel room so we thought it was more economical and fun to stay together.

Since moving to Atlanta, I don’t get to see ocean water that often. Well, swimable ocean water, not New York bay water. Yuk. I was ecstatic of the thought of relaxing and playing in the water like the good old times in Melbourne. As soon as I checked into the hotel I changed into my togs and went to play in the water. My skin hasn’t seen the sun in a while so I look a little pale, but who cares right? I met up with Bernie and we hired a jet ski and lived it up!!! It was so much fun. We felt an adrenalin rush riding it at 40 miles/hr (64 km/hr), it may not sound fast but on it’s a bumpy ride if you go any faster.

Here are some photos of us having an amazing time at the beach, notice the crystal clear water.

I had to include this picture; this car had 26 inch wheels and had hydraulic lift doors. The wheels might cost more than the car itself but it’s Miami, nothing is surprises the locals anymore.

After living it up on Saturday night, we slept in on Sunday morning and then I went down town South Beach again to take a look at the shops and stuff this time in day light. Lincoln Rd is the main mall strip that tourists go to for food, entertainment and shopping.

White Water Rafting Apr 08

1st April 2008

One of my new year’s resolutions was to keep fit and get out there and do more outdoors activities. I have been sticking the plan pretty well. I aim to walk around the block 3 times a week and also do long hikes on the weekends. My goal is to be able to hike around the Nepal and India in the future. I need to keep my fitness up so that I can carry all my gear during camping trips.

Lately, I have hiked every week that I have been in Georgia and if I am in another place I would be spending the whole day on foot exploring the new city. I am so hardcore that I even bought hiking pants, boots, socks, back pack, jackets, tops and water shoes. The right gear makes a big difference to the comfort level of the trip. All I need now is a tent and a trekking back pack and a few other small accessories and I am set to go. All the gear will come into use when I decide to do trips in South America and Nepal. I can’t wait!

So when the outdoors group organized white water rafting, who am I to say no?
On the day that we went it was cloudy and as it is only the beginning of spring, it was pretty cold. It was not the best weather for water activities but a little cold never really hurt anyone.

There is one secret that I don’t like admitting to – I can’t really swim. So being in gushing water with lots of rocks was nerve wrecking. Falling into the high speed stream would be one of those nightmares that you can’t wake up from. I didn’t do it when we were traveling through Europe in Switzerland and it has been one of my biggest regrets. There are safety precautions, right…? Mental note – must learn how to swim.

We had to wait for the other groups to finish off so we can all start the tour together. We went around the camp site finding things to do. All the utilities were put to full use as you can see from the photos. Our maturity was taking over our better judgment. The swings and horse shoe throwing was too tempting to walk away from. There were a lot of laughter and childlike behavior. We pretty made a bunch of teenagers in the rafting group look tame.

After 20 minutes of thorough safety instructions we put on our safety gear and being fairly petite you could hardly see me under all the gear. We decided to take a ‘before’ photo to compare with what we would look like afterwards.

Our group was and a teenagers’ church group (Americans are very religious if you don’t already know) were on the same tour. We all hopped on the yellow school bus and launched our rafts in the area provided. I felt like a child again, all bundled up in oversized gear. With fear in our eyes we drove towards the launch pad, the water looked…just plain scary.

The rafting ride was for only 5 miles (~ 8 km) long and river was a class 3-4 (there is a 5 levels and 1 being the tamest and 5 being really wild). So it was great for beginners to have fun and be exposed to some danger (not too much danger of course). Take a look at some of the pictures of us riding wild sections of the water and loving it. You can’t exactly see my face because half of it is hidden by the big helmet.

During the rapid water sections, the ride was exhilarating and the rests in the calm water were helpful because intense rowing can only last so long.

The photos below were taken towards the end of the river where it was most exciting.

As much fun as it was I was tired and my body ached from all the rowing towards the end of the river. We sat on the school bus that drove us back to the camping grounds. Even though my clothes were soaking wet and the weather was so cold I had a blast! This would be something I want to do again.

After the tour was finished we went back to the camp base and showered. Everyone got back at the same time so we had to wait for the showers in soaking wet clothes. I couldn’t wait to hop in a long hot shower, but as I was the last one, the hot water was gone and I was left with 10% hot and 90% cold water. It was freezing but I was appreciative of being able to clean up and to be able to put dry clothes on again.

After the event we drove back to Georgia and had dinner at a Mexican restaurant, for the first time I actually enjoyed Mexican food. I guess the meal was extra good because of the intense work out during the day and the cold made the hot food delicious.

I had an amazing time and recommend white water rafting for anyone looking for a bit of excitement and fun. There are a few more exciting trips that I have planned for the next couple of months, so stay tuned.

Caving in Raccoon Mountain Mar 08

26th March 2008

SPRING IN GEORGIA

Spring officially started in Georgia on the 20th of March. Even before that I started noticing the trees were looking a lot greener and some trees were already in fully blossoming. Daffodils were in full bloom on side streets and the weather is a lot warmer. Here are some photos of spring in Atlanta. The colours are vibrant and the day is longer; I love spring!!! Recently as the weather is warming up a little and there is more sun, I have been wandering around my area with the camera capturing the beautiful surroundings of Atlanta. It’s very relaxing and allows you to wind down after a hectic week.

CAVING IN RACCOON MOUNTAIN

I never knew caving existed until I joined the Atlanta Outdoors Group. I didn’t know caves are that long in distance to start with. I have to admit that I was apprehensive about the whole thing because I didn’t know whether or not I am claustrophobic and if I was going to panic in the middle of the tour. It would be extremely embarrassing to have a panic attack and having someone to carry me out. While all these thoughts bubbled through my head I decided to go ahead with it anyway because I have already paid for it and I might as well try something different. As I was putting on my safety gear I was so excited about the tour but started to realize that all this safety gear only meant one thing, it was going to be rough! Reagan, John, Claudia and I introduced ourselves and then followed our tour instructor.

The entrance to the cave was from the gift shop and that was pleasant enough, after 5 minutes of breezy walking, the tour guide (Chris) stopped and explained that the caving tour was going to start. We thought we should take a photo before we start and then we walked into a small crack that I didn’t know was there in the first place. Above were photos taken before the tour started, notice how clean we are.

We climbed, slid, crouched and crawled our way and witnessed some really amazing formations that our ordinary flash cameras were unable to record. It was dark, wet and dingy. As we were crawling I felt like I was in one of those James Bonds movies where the 007 would crawl his way through small cervices to escape his enemies. There was a sense of adventure and I felt so alive! As we were crawling butt to face at one stage I was so glad I didn’t have baked beans the night before because it could have been a bit embarrassing way to be acquainted with newly made friends.

We then reached the some amazing water features within the cave; the cameras could not capture how amazing it was but take my word for it, it was spectacular. There were strong jets of water bellowing down from the ceiling. I was beautiful. I have never seen anything like it.

As you can see from the photo below, sometime there is a very rocky walkway and the drop is around 3 m and we only have a piece of old rope to hang on to. It’s can get a little scary not knowing how often these ropes were tested and maintained. There were times when I thought about giving up and turning back because it was so physically and mentally demanding, but I didn’t want to ruin the group’s trip so I pressed on hoping that it was going to get easier. Fortunately it didn’t.

When we got to the dome, Reagan was taking photos of the group and found a strange mist that was around us, I took the photos of where the group was standing as well to see if there were something wrong with Reagan’s camera but got the same result. Chris started telling us about Willy. Willy was a security guard that looked after the gift shop and entrance of the cave and one day during one of his rounds he fell asleep whilst smoking. This caused a fire in the gift shop and he died as a result. He makes appearances around the area now and again. Chris has camped in the cave many times and swears to have seen a yellow orb that stood at the end of his sleep bag and as he reached out to touch it his hands went through it like a mist and it disappeared. He told a number of people about it and many others have had the same experience. Sometimes footsteps can be heard in the gift shop but when no one is there…ooooooooooooo.

“So, um…why didn’t anyone warn me that I was going to be stuck in a haunted cave that takes 4-5 hours to tour?”

As we sat in the dome (highest ceiling in the cave) and we turned out our head lights I sat there not know how to deal with complete darkness. There have been a lot of first times today, I was a caving and total darkness virgin and this is not a gentle introductory. I came to the realization that not many of us have been in total darkness, so this is what it’s like to be blind, it was confrontational because even if you waved your arm around right in front of your face you wouldn’t be able to tell. One of the group member felt a bit uneasy about the total darkness, I thought that I wouldn’t be able to handle but as I relaxed a bit more I was a bit more comfortable with it. I just makes you realize how you light, fresh air, sight and many everyday things for granted. I felt really lucky to be alive.

As we got further into the cave the water level reached our ankles and our shoes and socks were soaking wet. Our clothes were damp and we were sweating profusely from all the intense crawling, sliding and climbing. I could smell the dampness of the ceiling that was 5 cm from my face as I belly crawled into a crack that I could barely fit into. I am petite as it is, I can’t imagine anyone more than 100 kg being able to do this. There are no toilets and we only brought 1 bottle of water as some parts of the cave were so tight we were better off not carry anything at all, other than our cameras of course. There are no toilets so we all held it in for 4 hours.

There were times when I was physically scared for my safety but as soon as I concentrated a little bit more and I focused on the tasked at hand I was ok. I had to rely on my attention to ensure I don’t fall into one of the gaps and break my leg and having Chris to drag me out of the cave. Rescues can take up to 4-5 hours and people have broken legs and cracked their heads open…The trip really forced me to focus and live in the moment which I loved. I haven’t done anything so physically demanding before and I felt so alive whilst doing it. I am so grateful for the opportunity.

Towards the end of the tour we felt as sense of victory and achievement. So this is how it feels to overcome fear and challenges that you think you can’t achieve. There were some tourists that were just touring to take a look at the rock formations and as we climbed out of a small hole everyone wondered where we came from, we were covered in dirt and was soaked from head to toe. Here are some of our pictures after we finished the tour, notice the amount of dirt and relief on our faces.

My back, legs, arms and stomach were sore for 2 days after. I couldn’t stand up straight the next day and walked leaning to one side.

20th March 2008

It’s been a really busy month for work and personal traveling. I can’t really keep up fast enough and provide on time updates. I am going to make sure I catch up this month and have everything I intended to do, completed by the end of the month.

I recently downloaded some Buddhist teachings and guided mediation segments to learn a little bit more about myself and also to find inner. I don’t ever remember being at peace with myself and I think it is time that I come into terms with my life. Compared to other people I don’t think that I have that much of a battle but finding peace is still difficult for those that live a fortunate life. Probably more difficult than people that live more difficult lives. I need to learn to let the past go and accept what’s to come.

I came to realization that I have been waiting for someone to tell me what direction to take and where to go from here, but the answer has been with me all along. Some decisions can be really difficult to make, but we all must make them and move on so that better things can come our way. If we keep clinging to what is not ours we will remain stagnant and unaccommodating to change. I am sure this is not news to anyone but finally realizing it is extremely freeing.

Jasmine and I met during a charity function that our parents asked us to attend. Our parents are friends and she and I didn’t really know each other that well. I have been over her family’s house on occasions for family functions. Jas is in New York at the moment for a 4 months work secondment.

MAMA MIA

Jas and I took the opportunity of being in NYC to see Mama Mia on Broadway. We loved it! I didn’t hear very good reviews on it in Australia, but it totally exceeded my expectations. The plot was really good and the ABBA music was integrated into the story like it was written for it. The costumes were colourful, the plot was hilarious and as a result the show was entertaining. I guest there is nothing like being able to say that I saw Mama Mia on Broadway in NYC. After the show went to a Italian restaurant near Times Square to have dinner.

PHILIDELPHIA

I was in New York for work so Jas and I decided to meet up and go to Philly. I caught an earlier bus than Jasmine to Philly as she had to work on Saturday morning. I arrived in Philly around 10.30 am and walked around aimlessly looking for interesting things to photograph. Even though I was just walking aimlessly, there were many things to see and observe, the city is extremely photogenic, as you can tell from the photos.

Philly is a walk-able city and has the majority of the major attractions within walking distance from each other. It is one of the older cities of America and prides itself to be the founder of the grand American constitution and other American historical events. This is where Benjamin Franklin was one of America’s Founding Fathers and signed the constitution. Even though he was born and breed in Boston this did most of his famous work in Philly and was buried in Philly, I visited his gravestone.

Betsy Ross, whom sewed the first stars on the American flag also lived in Boston and her house is now a monument to history and tourist attraction.

The movie Rocky Balboa was based in Philly and you can see from the photos that there is a statue of him near the area where he trained, the steps to the National Museum. Philly also boasts some artistic statues, architecture and paintings.

There are still some really old houses in the old quarter of the city where the immigrants first settled in Philly when America opened its doors to immigrants. The houses are well maintained and are still in use today. They remind me of houses in Italy and Spain with the colours and narrow entrances. Of course it doesn’t have the glamour from NYC but it is a really neat little city to explore and I think it is a lot livable than NYC.

Philly is also famous for it’s Philly cheese steak, so Jasmine and I caught the later bus so that we can eat one. It was worth it. Nothing a like a greasy cheese steak to start the night. We missed the 8.00pm bus so we had to wait for 10.30pm bus, all this for a cheese steak, things us girls would do for food.

We then went to Jasmine’s friends’ birthday party and didn’t come back to the apartment till 4 am and were exhausted the next day. We tried to wake up early to go to Premium Outlet Malls (designer brand outlet mall) but we didn’t have the time because I had to catch a plane back to Atlanta later that afternoon. Bummer! My credit card was probably sighing with relief.

In the next issue I will post my caving adventures in Raccoon Mountains. Yes you heard right, CAVING.

I hope you are well and I hope to hear from you.

Hiking Georgia

17th March 2008

Hiking has always been a hobby that I never really had the time for and when I did have the time for it I didn’t have someone to do it with. I always would have an excuse for not doing it. Boredom was setting in and I was growing a bit negative about living in Georgia. It all changed during my trip to Boston, when after one of my meetings I was fortunate enough to meet a lady that recently moved from Los Angeles to Boston. She had a lot of trouble adjusting and making new friends and I can really relate to most of her stories about being new in town. She sympathized with me about my schedule and having to travel so much for work (it’s has its moments and I don’t mean to pull out the violin and everything…). She then told me about a webpage called www.meetup.com and the social events that it offers to people that are new in town and locals that want to make new friends and pursue interesting hobbies. As soon as I got back to Atlanta I immediately researched the web site and registered. I signed up for a number of groups. I loved the outdoors so I pretty much signed up for all the camping, hiking, boating and fishing clubs.

As a result, the last few weeks have been full of adventure and sore muscles. I haven’t done any intense long walks in a long time and I wasn’t sure I was fit enough to make to the end of some of the hikes but with plenty of encouragement from older group members, I kept on going. It’s sad but the oldies have more endurance and stamina than me. :o(

Cloudland Canyon

Cloudland Canyon was my first hike and I was surprise that I made it through. We started the day by playing frisbee golf, I am not a frisbee person. I never owned a dog, so frisbee throwing is all new to me. The game took a lot longer than expected and it was too cold to be moving so slowly. At one stage I couldn’t feel my fingers. Everyone was admiring my lack of experience with the frisbee but that was ok. After the game we hiked for 5 miles (8 kms) and it felt great to in the great outdoors.

Here are some photos of the landscape and me enjoying the great outdoors.

The landscape was so stunning and I was thrilled to get some exercise and fresh air. I even made sure I bought a camel pack to make the hike more enjoyable.

Isn’t it so beautiful? The landscape is a bit bare at the moment due to the dry winter but the hills were still majestic.

It was a long way to get to the waterfall but it was really worth it!!! Look at the water it was crystal clear. It was so peaceful and tranquil.

After the hike we all went to the all you can eat ribs buffet in Chattanooga in Tennessee. The people that were on the hike were friendly and easy going. I had a wonderful time meeting new people and also getting a breath of fresh air. I ate like there was no tomorrow to ensure that I make up for the lost energy during the hike.

Rabun Bald Trial

Rabun Bald was a strenuous trial. It was pretty much nothing but an uphill climb. The shameful part was that there were a couple of 50 year old women and they were doing fine while I struggled and fought to breathe. I think it’s time that I put a little bit more effort into getting fit because it’s getting ridiculous. At the end of the day, I made it to the top and I guess that’s what counts. The hike was strenuous but the view was worth it.

Providence Canyon

Providence Canyon is like the Grand Canyon of Georgia. It might be smaller but it probably is just as beautiful. The hike was an easy 8 miles (13 kms) and it was a lot of fun. I have gotten to know a couple of people in the group now so the hike was wonderful. It rained the night before so the sandy grounds on the trial turned into a mushy sandy slush. At times the sandy mush can sink your whole foot and ankle. My socks got wet and my pants were covered in mud.

You can tell spring was coming because all the blossoms were starting to emerge and it was a lot warmer than a couple of weeks ago. I can’t want for spring to start! I am having so much fun and I can’t wait till it gets warmer and the group starts to organize camping trips. Kayaking and caving is in the pipe works and I can’t wait!!
I have a number of trips planned the next few months and will ensure I take plenty of photos and keeping you updated.

7th March 2008

It snowed the night before I drove to Boston (13th Feb) and I was not looking forward to the afternoon traffic, snow mayhem and slippery roads. It’s hard enough already figuring out how to get there let alone fighting traffic and bad weather. The traffic going out of Manhattan NY was like traffic on the South Eastern on a Friday night after 10 bad accidents. NY traffic is hell, it doesn’t matter what time of the day the roads are never empty. It took me nearly 5 hours to get to Boston from NY and driving in the snow was a definitely the most challenging condition I ever encountered. I got lost several times and without a map, GPS or any other navigating device I panicked. All I had was a print out of the instructions on how to get to Boston. Who says I don’t have courage…? Ok, it’s just ignorance.

The next day after work I went around the city and explored it by foot, it was really cold and I wore two pairs of pants but still felt the chill every time there were gusts of wind.

As you know one of my passions in life is eating good food. I haven’t had good Yum Cha in a while (the trip to Australia was too short to eat everything that I was craving for). The Chinese food in Atlanta is really poor and I have yet to find good Yum Cha in NY. There really wasn’t anything like dim sums and hot tea on a cold winter’s day.

Boston has a large population of people that have migrated due to their schooling efforts, and it boasts around 40 colleges alone in the city area. There seemed to be a bigger Asian community in Boston than the other US cities that I have been to and this is evident in the food that was available.

I wore a ski jacket, jeans and a pair of stockings underneath and I was on occasions cold, especially when standing for more than 3 minutes. Any water that was left from the rain or simply spilt on the floor from yesterday was now ice. Need I say more?

There really isn’t anything like going out exploring a new city early on a Saturday morning. I would have to say that it is one of my favorite things to do.

During my walk I came across a big line across the street and after a little investigation I found that it was a line for a casting call for The Biggest Loser. As you can see from the line, they won’t ever run out of candidates in the US, yeap, lots of people to choose from. America, the land of opportunities…

The Boston streets definitely have been influenced by European architecture, especially the side streets where the small pedestrian walkways are surrounded by shops. There was a historical burial ground in the centre of the city and the gravestones dated back to the 1600’s. The walk through cemetery was intriguing, the dates where barely readable and it was for some reason so peaceful.

I had a few meetings in Boston and from my dealings with them it seems that the people in the North Eastern states of America seem a lot more direct and open. I think the people here are more diverse and are more welcoming than the people down in the South Eastern states. This is just my personal observation, for those that have been to the US, it would be interesting to hear your thoughts.

According to the locals, Newbury St is Boston’s exclusive shopping haven; it has all the exclusive designer brand shops. This is also where locals and tourist go to dine and stop for coffee. The buildings were very much influence by English and French architecture.

Even though Boston is a medium size city, it is still charming and easy to get around on foot. Driving is a bit difficult in the city due to the one way streets and huge quantities of pedestrians, and the walk is worth the effort.

Next week, Jasmine and I are planning to visit Philadelphia. Keep a look out for the next issue.

It’s been a few month since the last distributed the Adventures of Lin Lin. My life started getting extremely hectic just before I went back to Australia for a holiday. I wanted to make sure I organize a lot of the work to be done before I left. Unfortunately I still feel extremely behind and I am still catching up.

Christmas is a time to share with family and love ones, but being a new resident in Atlanta I didn’t have my family around me to celebrate with. I was apprehensive of the coming event but fortunately for me, Errin (one of girls that live in my building) invited me to her family’s Christmas Eve dinner. I was grateful for her generosity and compassion. We exchanged presents, ate dinner and then went to midnight mass. The choir and symphony at the church was amazing, religion is taken very seriously down South. It makes you appreciate what you have and I have never missed my family as much as I did then.

The weather in Atlanta fluctuates quite a bit and it can get really warm (up to 24oC) and extremely cold (-2oC) within a day or two. It even snowed in early January and it was just so beautiful to watch. I would sit on my balcony and walk the flakes drift, if you look really carefully the fine details are on the snow flakes are astounding. How can something be so simple and so beautiful? It only snows here every few years so I am extremely lucky to be witnessing it. It doesn’t snow much in the South. Here are some photos of the snow, I love the photo of me in the pink Jacket, I look like a kid with a obsession with Barbie.

After Christmas I took sometime off to see Savannah and also to Charlotte to visit an old friend. Let’s just say it was an interesting trip. Savannah was so quant and elegant. It is a small town with culture, lots to do and most importantly good food. A few movies were filmed in Savannah as it makes a great setting for films and books. It’s just really idyllic.

I celebrated the New Year with some new friends Errin and I met in the pub. There is nothing like welcoming the New Year with good friends.

I came back to Australia towards the end of January to attend my friend’s wedding and also to visit family. The people were the same, nothing much has changed other than real estate prices and interest rates. I got to see my family and also catch up with some friends. I didn’t have time to catch up with everyone, which was a shame, but there is always next time. The wedding was a lot of fun (for those that were there, maybe too much fun?) and the brides maids were not only well behaved and polite but also extremely sober.

I think my family found it really hard that their only daughter was again going to be on the other side of the planet for who knows for how long. It was definitely harder to leave them this time than the last. I sat the plane wondering what my life would have been like if I didn’t leave for the US? But all that was forgotten as soon as the seat was fully reclined and the food was served.

I flew back to the US on the 10th of Feb (after Chinese New Year) and flew to NY on the 12th Feb. It was exhausting with the time difference and jet lag. It was really warm in Australia and when I flew back to the US it was freeeeezing! It was snowing cats and dogs in NY. The car I was driving had no control and it kept swerving every time I tried to go more that 30km/hr, driving in bellowing snow is really scary. I also met up a family friend in NY (it was the weirdest feeling seeing her in NY). We met for dinner and decided to call it a night because it was soooo cold, but next time I am there we are going to do a few activities, can’t wait!!!

I traveled a bit more after NY and have been at home in my apartment the last few days (thank god!) and I am just resting and preparing for my next trip to NY. It’s been really warm in Georgia lately so I have joined a hiking group (it’s a really cool website that allows you to join into groups of people with the same interests www.meetup.com, I have been doing so many activities since I joined) and Georgia has really good hiking areas. I am going to work myself up to be able to camp as well. It’s all really exciting because we are going caving, kayaking and white water rafting the next few months as it gets even warmer. I am bursting with excitement.

When I left Australia for the US last June, a friend of mine gave me a book on Buddhism for busy people and I really liked the theology behind the practice. I have come to like so much that I have podcasted some mediation and teachings segments onto my ipod. I really recommend it to everyone, there are lots of really simple things we can do to better understand ourselves and others around us. I have seen improvement on my thought process, attitude and outlook on life since.

It would be interesting to hear from some of you with regards to your experiences with maturing.

25th November 2007

It was Thanks Giving in America and it being a 2 day public holiday I took advantage of the opportunity and went to visit Lisa. Lisa and I went to uni together and have known each other for a while now and it was nice to see someone from home. Lisa is in Canada for a couple of years and I am very fortunate to have some 'nearby', it's actually really comforting knowing that someone I personally know from Australia is on the same continent.

Last week was also my birthday, many thanks to everyone that sent their regards. :o) I am very grateful for your SMSs and emails.

To be honest with you, I can't believe that I am 27 years old. It only felt yesterday that I turned 21. Time has gone by so quickly, sometimes it scares me because I am not sure that I will be able to achieve all the goals that I envisioned myself to achieve before 30. There is just so much to do and see, and it seems that the options are endless. When there are so many options available to you and if you have doubts in what you want, there is a lot of room for confusion and anxiety. You desperately hope that the decisions you make will turn out the way you expect it to but sometimes life has other plans, that’s when things start to get “interesting”. I think what I am going through, like so many other people around my age, is what people call a quarter life crisis.

After Lisa picked me up from the airport (the poor girl had to wait around because the plane was delayed due to the snow) we went to a restaurant to eat dinner. She and I were sitting in a restaurant in Toronto eating pho and we I both had deja vu of uni days when we lunched on Glenferrie Rd in Hawthorn. Back then we lived very simple lives and couldn't wait to get out of uni to get into the “real world”, now that we both work and have debt to pay we realize that those uni days were definitely more carefree and fun. Somehow the grass is always greener on the other side. So as we were sitting eating pho the snow fell softly outside and the sky was growing darker. We came to the realization that we have come a long way since we first met in first year uni. If someone was able to go back in time and told us that in 9 years time that one of us would be in Canada and the other would be in the US, we would laugh it off. We never imagined that our lives would turn out the way it is now. It’s strange how things work out, as a lot of our friends have drifted to different parts of the world. We sat there wondering if it is our generation that yearns to experience living in another country or if the opportunities are better now than before. Why are there so many Australian expats scattered all over the world? What is it about our country that makes us want to leave so much?

I have been traveling quite a bit, I would really like things to slow down but for the next few weeks I will be jet setting to Kansas and then back to New York again. I feel homeless and there is a sense of imbalance in my life at the moment. There is also a lot uncertainty in my life and it throws me off but I am trying my hardest to make the best of everything.

Enough of my complaints, here are some details of what we did in Toronto.

I flew to Canada on Thursday (the 22nd of Nov) and Lisa and I catched up and did a bit of shopping to prepare me for the cold. The snow was so beautiful. The cold weather was actually not as bad as I imagined but I did land on my butt as soon as I climbed out of the car. I didn’t wear fancy footwear, even in runners you can easily slip on the icy roads. I was just really happy to catch up with Lisa. We spent the night catching up, preparing food our Thanks Giving dinner and played with Comet. Comet was just too happy with the attention that Lisa and I were giving him.

On Friday we went into downtown Toronto to look around. It was bluddy freezing even with all the warm gear we had on. We did a bit of site seeing and also shopping. The traffic was crazy when we drove back to Mississauga. Lisa and I spent a few hours cooking the turkey and other dishes to go with it. The cooking was hard work but so much fun. The turkey turned out really good but I think I put too much spices on the vegetables so it was a bit spicy. Sheldon and his brother drank at least 6 glasses of water during dinner. The meal had a little bit of a bite to it and it was funny at the time watching the white boys suffer.

On Saturday morning we went to Niagara Falls and had dinner to celebrate Sheldon’s birthday. We were too tired to go out to see the Toronto night life after a big day at Niagara Falls so we had a quiet night in with the Wii machine. As you can see from the photos, we had a lot of fun.

I am in Washington at the moment, there is a conference on energy efficiency and I thought that it would be of great benefit to be here. So far it has been really good, I have learnt heaps. Washington is a lot smaller that what I thought. It is a district and not a state and is surrounded by beautiful and graceful Virginia and Maryland. It’s really cold here in Washington. Their autumn is like our winter in Australia.
The streets are surrounded by traditional English buildings; it reminds me a lot of Melbourne and London. Below are some pictures of the buildings in the downtown and Mall area.

There are a lot of homeless people and this makes me think why one of the world’s most important decision making places is like this. I wonder what politicians are thinking when they drive by so many homeless people, do they think about how effective their policies are? These people sleep in the harsh winter weather. When I visit McDonalds in the morning I can see lots of homeless people using the bathroom and also sitting there eating breakfast. They all gather at certain places and seem to be very organized. What decisions have they made in life to get them to where they are now? Surely no one wants to live in the streets by choice.
Getting back to Washington. Washington is quite small and the night life from what I can tell is limited. There is a lot to do if you have kids. The majority of the museums are free and they are worth seeing. Everything is within walking distance and the subway is extremely effective and traffic is not as bad as Atlanta or New York. There are good restaurants you walk and keep an eye out for them. Here are some photos.

The weather is getting extremely cold over here, I don’t think I will ever complain about the cold in Melbourne again. Melbourne cold is nothing compared to Georgia cold or New York cold. It is on a totally different level. I heard that when it gets closer to December New York transforms itself and Christmas decorations lights up the whole city. I will make sure I go to Manhattan right before Christmas to do some shopping and experience a white Christmas.

Below are pictures of famous landmarks that I visited. The White House was a lot more tranquil than what I expected. I have always wanted to see the Lincoln Memorial in person, so that was really special for me. The US Capitol looks exactly like what is depicted in the movies and media. It was a little cold but I had perfect weather and I am not going to complain.

I love science so naturally I was keen to go to the Space Museum, the best thing about DC is that most museums are free. There was an IMAX show on how Earth was created and it was trully amazing, that was the first time I have been in an IMAX theatre. Take a look at some of the awesome pictures from the Space Museum.
