Today is my day off for the week. Last eve's class with Jen focused on rotation of the hip...a common theme recently since that's what we worked on in Melissa's class on Saturday as well. Jen stressed to engage the rotation of the hip through the thigh (and not pulling on the foot and thus cranking the knee). As has been my practice recently, I stepped back to feel and truly listen to what she is saying. It was a very deliberate practice and I felt a nice warm opening feeling around my sacrum. At the end of the practice, I took lotus on the opposite side, but left the right foot a little further out. It felt great, no cranking on my knee, and I felt a juicy gentle opening in my right hip socket.
I also came to another realization yesterday in that a lot of the pre-yoga stretches (e.g. pidgeon) I do are warmups for the piriformis muscle. (On a side note, is pre-yoga stretching like a pre-meeting in the Dilbert comic strip?) It is a very difficult muscle to locate and difficult to work with. My suspicion is that a lot of the inward rotation and outward rotation of the femur in the primary series is to train this muscle so that it is activated. All I know is that I have this incredible dull itchy sensation in my pelvis at times when I really start working the psoas, piriformis, etc. Perhaps it's these types of sensations that led the ancient yogis to think of the awakening of the kundalini at the base of the spine?
