Yesterday's Tomorrows
Yesterday's Tomorrows returns to our past
to find hope and solutions for our
todays, and our tomorrows
In our not so distant past we knew how to have fun. We enjoyed the outdoors in all kinds of weather. We knew that family was all important and sitting down to a game at the kitchen table after the dinner dishes were cleared away was something we all looked forward to and enjoyed.
We ate home cooked meals that simmered or baked for hours, filling our homes with the smells of comfort and love.
Times have changed and these days we're addicted to the Internet, TV, and video games. Even our baby toys flash lights, squeal sirens, and say phrases while they drive themselves across the floor.
Are we better off? That's something each of us has to decide for themselves. In this blog and on the corresponding site, we'll talk about yesteryear and what we can learn from our parents and grandparents.
Our first goal is to recruit reporters. These volunteers will be asked to search out stories of days gone by through interviews with those who've lived in times past. Every story is precious. First dates, first jobs, family times, things they did for fun, meals they cooked, and so much more will be posted here and on the site.
Our second goal is to find ways these stories are relevent to our lives today. As we read about the lives of our elders, we will learn how our lives today can be enhanced and enriched. We will discuss games we can play that don't ding and blink. We will try out old recipes and learn to preserve home cooked meals. We will learn the best way to pack a good snowball, the best kind of bicycle to ride, the best trees for climbing. We'll learn how to make Autumn leaf booklets, identify insects, the best fences to climb. We'll examine board games, decide which make for the best family fun. We'll talk about candles and compare them to oil lamps and electric lights. We'll learn about being prepared, too, in case our electricity fails us. We won't sit around twiddling thumbs, not us, we'll be the ones having fun and eating well.
Our third goal is to use what we've learned here to help families in need in holiday seasons.
What role can you play in all this? We're glad you asked. Here are our current open volunteer positions:
Reporters of all ages. If you can read, if you can write, if you are willing to respectfully interview older people for our site, we'd like to talk with you.
Contributors. If you have knowledge and/or skills and the above topics have triggered your creative juices, we'd like to talk with you.
Organizers. If you can see a path to accomplish these goals and help refine them, perhaps add to them, we'd like to talk with you.
Site Builders. We need a creative person who can build a website with love.
Researchers. We will need free or very low cost images and information.
Donators. We want to build a collection of board games and toys, and perhaps food gift certificates to share with families in need. We will also have operating costs for the site.
If any of this intrigues you, calls to you, please write to me, Kim, at magical@ptd.net. If you have other ideas for our effort, please share those, as well.
Join me at the beginning of what may well become a favorite place for folks to spend time and share memories.
Thank you,
Kim Wood
