I have heard a lot about my high school friends in China recently: most of them are already graduated from Universities, looking for jobs; some of them have been working for a year; amazingly, one of my good friends is already married and has a kid. However, I am so left behind because I am still in school when they already step in the society. The reason I am still in school it’s because of one of my identities----- I get addicted to a thing very easily. When I am addicted to a thing, I will ignore everything around me----my friends, parents, and education. It sounds crazy, I know.

When I was 19 years old, I got my first job as a juice-maker in a dessert shop. I think the job was actually fun at the beginning because I could make various fruit dessert with my hands. More important, it was the first time I step in the society and make money. Eventually, I was addicted to it. When my boss gave me massive working hours that conflicted with my school schedule, I didn’t reject. During that time, I worked for about 30 hours a week. I kept cutting my classes because I was too tired, and I had no time to study. As a result, I got 3 F’s and 1 D in that semester. Looking at my grades, I decided to quit the job, and put more focus on my education. In the next semester, I got good grades.

However, this good attitude of studying didn’t last for long. Just right after the semester that I got good grades in, I was addicted to an online game, World of Warcraft. During that time, I put all my focus on the game. I just stay by my computer all day. I didn’t attend classes or go hang out with friends. Therefore, I lost all the connection with people that I knew. Basically, I had no life during the time I gotaddicted in World of Warcraft. I even quarreled with my parents for that for many times.

Now, I realize that I have been wasted about two years because addiction. However, I don't feel regret because I have learned what kind of person I am; and what is my primary goal at this monent----finish college---- from those experiences. I also make some methods to prevent myself to get addicted again.

addiction can be really good or really bad depending on the situation. My fiancee has an addictive personality and she is a top performer at work and when she is in school. Its good to hear that you realize your personality because you can use it to your advantage in many ways.

Every one has his/her own addiction and true. It is very difficult to stop outselves once we are addicted to something we like. But we have to stop ourselves when we notice that we are addicted into something that is bad before the trouble comes.
I think that you really need to thanks to me because i am the one who convinced you the most to quit playing that online game. It was not only wasting your time but also money.

Its good you found a way to resolve it on your own. I know a lot of people that can't even make it that far. Everyone has some type or form of an addiction, we all just need to learn to control it. Don't let the addiction control us. I understand what you say about the job getting tiresome and not wanting to go to school because of the fatigue. I work about 30 hours a week and sometimes dread getting out of bed the next day...but i know i have to. Education is what is going to get me a better job then the one i am in now. same for you! and also let your friends in china be your motivation, an extra push to keep striving for your goal!

This is what I do when I want to pull myself out from something that I am addicted to : reduce the amount of time spent on that thing day by day.......you may not be able to stop RIGHT away....but time is probably the best solution.

For now, I have to say education is the most important for us probably ! just stay focus on it ....hang on there !

I think what you said about addiction can be good and bad, especially by your examples. To me it shows that you are a determined person because you will work really hard at something so that you become great at it, and that is really good. The thing to learn is that you are a determined person, but i think setting goals and making priorities will help so things dont get too out of hand.

I think the best way to overcome addiction is to set a goal, whether shortterm or longterm, like you do now. It is good that you have something to accomplish, to graduate from college. I have the same goal too!

I also have the same feeling when my supervisor asked me to work more hours, and i always say yes. After several weeks later, i found that should hurt my grades if i still keep working such long hours. I am glad i can control my working schedule and study plan. Yes,you should be respsonsible for what you did, after you learned something from your experience, then you will become more smart than before

I know its good and all to get entertained and make some fast money but you shouldn't ignore your school work because thats going to help you in the future. If you want to do all of those things you should at least make a balanced scheadule so that you have time for fun and school work..I hope everything goes good for you and remember too much of anything is bad for you.

okay, so this comment is not regarding your addiction as everything here seem to be writing about. my motivation in life is to be successful and be happy. often times, i look at other people's life and learn from their experience of how i can turn their situation into a better outcome for myself if i was put in their position. as for you, if your friends are out there making good money, i would rec. that you strike on success and study harder to get better grades. when you're done with school, you guys can talk about your job and your beach house in the hamptons or something. =P

Addiction is a problem that can't be understood by everyone. It's not bad that you are able to realize that you had a problem though and that's the first step to finding a solution to your problem, or rather you being distracted, dont waste your time, get done with school so you can catch up with your friends, it'll be the best addiction that you'll ever have, just keep working hard.
