| November 4 - Surrender |
Today's meditation is (from Living a Sacred Life):
This is the season of letting go. Today I surrender to the flow of life and allow my spirit to rest on the tide.
This one is interesting. Isn't life in general us floating in the tide? We try to determine where we are going, but it doesn't always work. We go where the tide takes us. I had to surrender to the tide completely several years ago, floating in a little rowboat, coming nearer and going farther from what I wanted. I had no oars, no way to guide myself, just floating. It was a terrible time in my life.
Now I have a couple of oars. The tide still controlls where I go, but I can navigate a little in the midst of life.
I like this metaphor. You may be taking a cross-counry road trip, doing great. You're getting great gas milage, everyone is having fun, you've made it from New York to Nevada on your way to California. Then, you drop an oar. The car breaks down in the middle of nowhere in Nevada, and if any of you know the geography in Nevada, Las Vegas is about all there is in Nevada. This is the tide pulling you where it wants you to go, no matter how in control you think you are, the tide is in control.
Religious people, like myself, may say that this is God, or whoever they worship, bringing His plan into play. The car was meant to break down to teach you a lesson. Some people believe that this life, and all the lives to come, are full of lessons that we are to learn. Life is a class, you pass or fail. I have a friend that has had a rough life: grow up in an abusive home, married an absolutely horrid woman, got convicted of child molestation when he was innocent, lost his job he had had for twenty-five years, his wife left him, he lost his house, and ended up in the state mental health hospital. Five of the seven things happened within about five years. He was extremely suicidal, but the thing that kept him going was, "I don't want to take this class again!!" He left the hospital stable and on medication. He has a nice apartment now, health insurance, a monthly check from the government, good friends, and, in general, a good life. I think he'll pass the class.
You can equate the tide to God, destiny, or anything else, but it is in conrol. Go with the flow and see where life takes you! My stepdad says, "Walk on the water." Just have faith that it will all turn out okay, and you'll do fine. Okay may not happen for several years, or it may happen in a few minutes, but when you walk on the water, you're giving yourself to the tide, pulling your oars in, and seeing what happens. Just have faith. Eventually it will be okay. I know this from experience. It took six years to be okay, but the point is, it did reach okay. I've got my oars back and can steer a little, but I still go with the flow and see where life takes me.
