Taking a closer look at Machida
Lyoto Machida. There's one name that starts a blaze of negative comments across message boards, and almost always its about his "boring" fighting techniques that leave many booing with delight. But while the average fan mistakes Machida's unorthodox style for a "hit and run" thats not the case. Upon closely re-evaluating and analysing Machida's matchup against Ortiz, I understand why he fights this way. Machida's southpaw stance is just one of his many unorthodox ways of fooling his challenger. While you are expecting him to throw a jab, he stuns you with a spinning back kick. Frank Trigg once said that Lyoto dropped him twice in a row by back kick in a sparring session. So heres the bottomline: Lyoto uses the element of SURPRISE, which is the heart of his unorthodox movement. This leads me to believe that Machida plans his strategy similar to that of a chess player. He anticipates his next move according to the opening his challenger gives him. He keeps his face expressionless, he eyes are always closely evaluating his opponents body movement and when he spots a weakness he attacks. So he doesn't "hit and run" he hits and waits. He waits for the exact moment when his opponent is at his weakest to land his precise shots that scores points and guarantees a victory. Lyoto moves with the utmost proficiency. This is why the majority of his fights go the distance. He slowly picks apart his challenger, out maneuvering them in every aspect. While his style is not the most entertaining, it takes a fast thinking, intellgent, and well conditioned athlete to perform it brilliantly. Machida is buildt for domination in the light-heavyweight division and while many don't appreciate his style of battle, it is one of the best. R.R
