MMA Studies Part 3: Safety and Rules.
Okay peeps, Im back with the third edition of MMA studies! Before the lesson starts always remember that being a good MMA competitor takes hard training, intense focus, and the willingness to subject oneself to constant learning and adaptation. The adoption of rules and regulations, which brought about medical exams, medical suspensions and weight classes, coupled with good referees shows concrete steps to protect the fighters and allowed MMA to spread to many new venues around the US and the rest of the world. The referees stay active in the sport and most importantly are familar with the fighters. They have a better understanding of when a fighter is in trouble and when they are not. One other safety measure wasn't intended to be a safety measure, the small/baby gloves. You would think that the smaller gloves would provide more damage per strike and you are right. So how is this safer?? A fighter is less likely to take repeated punishment due to the fact that the punches landed will stop a fight more quickly, unlike boxing where a fighter often takes continual punishment for the duration of a fight. Throw in the facts that many fights end up on the ground and there are no standing 8 counts, the punishment fighters take are less severe than most would think. Always remember that the person at the bottom MAY have the advantage. The arts of BJJ and catch as catch can wrestling changed the fight game forever by giving the opportunity for the person at the bottom not only to defend themselves but also create and attack that could potentially force their opponent to quit or risk suffering serious injuries. Here are some rules for you to remember: No hair pulling, biting or eye gouging of any kind, fish hooking. No small joint manipulation, striking to the spine or back of the head. No striking downward using the point of the elbow (elbow coming down at noon to 6). Stomping a grounded opponent, headbutting, clawing, pinching or twisting flesh is forbidden. No holding the fence or ropes. No spiking a opponent to the canvas on his head or neck. No groin attacks of any kind, no throat strikes, including, without limitation, grabbing the trachea. No kicking/kneeing a grounded opponent. As you can see there are many rules governing MMA, these are just a few.
