What a fun idea.
I like how you think.
I do ritualistic things like that, mostly with candles and incense.
I will play along.
I like to learn new things.

yeh I am trying to make it fun for me.. since its not the same when you are alone. AND... since I am a lazy bum who still has not mastered teh full spiritual side of ramadan... that I need to add tehse thigns to give me a certain feeling ...
other people who have gone deeper into the spiritual side of it.. have no need for trinkets to FEEL it... I however do.. :(
It is sad to admit it.. but yes... I am stil at the begining of my own road... and I am still learning....
Someone who has a deep faith and connection with God will not need anything else... and there are people like that... I hope I can be one of them soon.. :)
These trinkets dont really exist in the islamic philosophy.. no rituals of lanterns or candles.. or wahtever... tehy are fun yes.. but a true beleiver would not need them... as his/ her connection with the God would be all so filling and powerful..and peacful.. that mere trinkets are not even in teh equation... he wont even think of them...
God I hope I become like that one day.. :) ...... in other words that people might understand.. 'to be one with the force'... as it were :)
but yes they are fun... and there is no problem in having them... but there are no 'rituals' really for them... they are just fun things.. :)

yeh It might start thursday.. I dont know... we usually wait and see what they say on thursday/ friday...etc
in each country they have what they call a 'moon sighting'.. they have to see the moon and confirm it, before they announce it to everybody ... so usually everybody is waiting and checking TV and radio stations :)

LOL.. yeh we should.. but the problem is when you are on a show.. you tend to want to behave properly because that is what you should be doing...lol
in our philosophy.. deeds are by intentions.... if your intention to do good is so other people say oh he is a good person.. then your deed is not accepted. it is only accepted if its meant for the purpose of doing good .. pure intention.
ramadan propogates and idea of doing good while no others know about it... to purify your intentions... you dont give to charity and then go tell people about it!... as they said in one hadith... your right hand does something good... which your left hand does not know about it :)

I like the idea of everyone starting a festival when they think its the right time. I'll take the start of Ramadam by your sightings. Like all festivals I accept that it can be celebrated without trinkets and geegaws, but we are human and like fun things. I always have candles and I have some decorations from chinese new year which I will put up, I even have a copy of the Quar'an somewhere. We need your guidance though. What is a festive greeting for Ramadan, like the equivalent of our happy christmas? ...don't forget something for the fishy friends.

Oh wow.. they left a copy of the quran with you?... is it the translated version?
I never thought of it as a festival.. that is a very cute way of thinking about it.. :)
to me its more like a month long meditation session...... and then we have the celebration at the end of it for 3 days :)
maybe because I am always feeling guilty that i am not doing enough.. that I take it very seriously..
You wanna join in...
oh I wish I could send you some decorations you could hang... like the lantern I got.. its very pretty.. I took a picutre of it... but now my computer wont recognize the digital camera... so I cant download them..uugg
chinese decorations will do nicely :) they always have nice stuff ....
we always used to make our own when we were kids.. the lanterns .. the little drums... I will explain about them in another post :)
some greetings to use:
Ramadan Kareem (generous / giving)
Ramadan Mubarak (blessed)
Ramadan Saeed (Happy)
another universal one to use is Salam... (peace)... or Al-Salam (The Peace/ source of peace.. which is one of the names of God)...
they say it as such: Al-Salamu Alay-kom
(Peace be upon you).
that is your lesson for today...
read .....memorize.... there is a quiz on them tomorrow.. hahahaahahaha
:D
Ah yes the fish... I should get them a new tree...for their tank :)

Al-Salamu Alay-kom and see ya tomorrow, God Willing. The Quran is translated. I couldn't read it in the original language. I have a lot of respect for the books of the major faiths. I have others, working on the theory that they all have positive points. I think a tree for the fishes is a great idea, I am into trees today thanks to Djif's blog.
