Surfing with Sea Lions
May 16th

What can I say? Tofino will always be my favourite place in this country. The weather was perfect so of course the top on the jeep came down – finally. I would have been happy to cruise around for the day but the surf was calling. I rented my equipment and joined a British couple for a lesson. I’ve surfed before but wanted to improve, plus it was only fifty bucks. We ended up surfing for most of the day together. I was catching a lot of waves and riding a good distance. The biggest wave was a 6 footer that snuck up on me. I didn’t last more than a second but I caught it. At one point I saw a head pop up in the water. I catch a wave, look behind me and there’s a giant sea lion swimming along. It scared me so much I lost my balance and bailed into the water. I was freaked out so made a beeline for shore. This thing must have weighed over 1000 lbs. I was back in the water when I noticed other surfers laughing at me.

Not much else to report. Cruised around town for a while, ate another great meal with and incredible view. Hung out with some locals. This is a place I will definitely visit again.
