Ever notice that the greatest whiners on a wiki are the paid workers? No? Well, then, you haven't looked closely enough.
It would be funny if it weren't so blatantly selfish and inconsiderate of all the efforts put in by the masses of of volunteers. And it becomes completely unforgivable when the paid employees are entitled to use whiny language as a form of communication with the rest of the community. Shades of "my personal time is being disrupted by your complaints" flow through the whining and sometimes the brutal and less than polite responses from the paid employee make one wonder whether or not such an employee has even bothered to read the wiki documentation on assuming good faith and maintaining civility.
That is is though - there are two rules. One for staff and one for volunteers. It divides like this:
- Staff are overworked, they try their best, the "poor" things
- Staff are being battered by all the demanding volunteers
- Volunteers are a dime a dozen and are therefore highly dispensable
- Staff are not dispensable because personal relationships have been built up between them and the owner(s) of the wiki
- Volunteers ask for the moon; shift the goalposts on them and make them look like the whiners
Easy really. Not.
