 Thoughts on beginnings
Today is the first day of the rest of your life.  Of course, this is true of every single day that you're alive.  As a matter of fact, each moment is the beginning of something.  We don't always know what.  Sometimes it is so seemingly miniscule that we miss it entirely, too busy with the worries that we can do nothing about.  Sometimes we simply refuse to acknowledge it, out of fear of the inherent ending that accompanies each beginning.  The beginning of married life is the end of single life.  The beginning of a new job is the end of the old one, or of the freedom of unemployment.  The beginning of a new life is the end of the old one.

So how many beginnings, how many possibilities do we lose simply because we are afraid of the inevitable end of something familiar?  Does familiarity hold any real value?  It could be argued that familiarity actually harms us, makes it easier not to seek out new experiences and grow as human beings.  If we do the same things over and over, we learn nothing, grow bored and miserable.  Safe?  Sure.  Comfortable?  Absolutely.  Gratifying?  Not in the least.

It's outside our comfort zones that we grow at all.  Beginnings happen outside what we know.  Life happens outside the box.  So, if you really want to live, find the thing that scares the living shit out of you, and do it.  You'll be better for it.  I promise.
