Romantic comedies run by the same plot; boy and girl meet, usually there is some witty banter as to them getting together, they break up and then realise they cant live without eachother and they get together again. I have yet to see a romantic comedy that doesn’t end in romance. So what happens when in the intro, the movie says straight out that its not going to be a love story?

A quirky romantic comedy veering away from the norm, 500 DAYS OF SUMMER follows 500 days in the relationship between Summer Finn (Zooey Deschanel) and Tom Hansen (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), with all their ups, downs and everything in between.
When Tom Hansen, an aspiring architect who works as a greeting card company, meets his boss’s new secretary, Summer Finn, he is infatuated immediately. Summer isnt the most prettiest person in the world, neither is she the skinniest but theres something about her that men are drawn to, and Tom is drawn to that immediately. Tom immediately knows that Summer is the girl he wants to spend the rest f his life with, unfortunately, Summer doesn’t think the same way. Summer doesn’t believe in boyfriends, and wants to be single. So, you see the dilemma.
500 DAYS OF SUMMER is presented in non-chronological order, with each scene being introduced by the day number. The movie, abnormally, starts very late in the time line, where Tom thinks hes lost Summer for good, and mopes around as if hes lost half his body. We cut from the happy days at the start, to the sad parts spread throughout, with only half the movie being filled with rainbows and smiles.
This movie is a breath of fresh air from the other rom coms around. Its arty yet hollywood, corny yet relevant and its cute yet dark. Everything is this movie is very realistic, and all the feelings that Tom and Summer are feeling you could see being felt with any couple in the world. It is very easy for people to think Summer as the bad guy, she being the one to break Tom’s heart, but all the points she makes about relationships are so true so its unfortunate that its so easy to take Toms side of the arguments.
If you want a movie with real filmmakers charm and a quirky feel that 500 DAYS OF SUMMER is a must see. This movie has taken a very simple plotline and added the smart quips and ideas to make it a one in a million watch. It is a little bit confusing with the days being so non-consecutive so you have to be watching carefully to understand where you are in the timeline, but 500 DAYS OF SUMMER is a must watch.
