 Ten Dollar Happiness

There she was, alone in the quiet dullness of idled life. The world
around her was humming by at the speed of the American dream, and she
was just sitting there alone in the stillness of poverty and ruined
life. Her head was cast down, and the look of a deep dark depression
filled her face. In her weathered hands, she was holding a worn out
card board sign that hinted at god and something green. She was only
in her late twenties but life had chewed her up and now she was left
to survive on a curb side begging to people who just didn't give a
shit.
I felt so fucking bad for her, just sitting there unwanted and alone,
that I stopped my car and called for her. When I got her attention,
she was shocked to learn that she wasn't completely invisible.
I handed her ten dollars and told her two things: " Good luck and hang
in there."
She thanked me with all her heart

Her dirty face radiated with seemingly endless sunshine at the sight
of the green ecstasy in her hands. Sadly however I knew this happiness
would die, because after all it was only ten dollar happiness, and a
world of binges and failed opportunities awaited. It was so fucking
sad I wanted to cry. I really did.

As I drove off to privilege, I caught one last glimpse of her in the
rear view mirror. She was skipping down the street, parading in her
new-found wealth. It was almost like seeing a new person, but then I
wandered how long the smile would last, and how long it would take
until that lonely unwanted girl crawled back to her curb-side begging
to people who didn't give a shit. It was so fucking sad, I wanted to
cry, I really did.

I really don't know what to say about people in her position. Sometimes I get mad & think that they put themselves in that position. That if they really wanted something better, they can get a job. $10.00? They can get that working a couple of hours at McDonalds. Some of these people don't want responsibility. They just want everything handed to them. And how do you know your $10 didn't go on their next high?
But then I don't know. Because I know there's others that just really f'd up and now find themselves hopeless. But if they can just get themselves out of the hopelessnes & really believe. They can, w/hard work, they can get out of the situation that they are in.
Anyway, bless you for having such a big heart.

yes you make a good point but i think this piece ties into the notion of how much the individual is responsible for his life and how much life is responsible for the outcome of the individual. Im sure this girl grew up in a poor family and may have been exposed to the some of the stains existence like phy/sex abuse and neglect. She may also may not have had the motivation to pursue a higher degree of education because the money was not there and she was more concerned with meeting her basic needs of survival. remember the biggest problem with america is that it does not offer its citizens a right to equal opportunity. The whole notion of equality is completelt absurd.
