A Tuesday

I don't know why I've been so resistant of the internet. I've gotta go with the times I was born in, and naturally so.

I actually did something today, or tried anyway. I researched the genocide in Darfur. I think I've gathered enough information to get a good understanding of what the situation is in Sudan. I'd like to expose others to the things I learned. Maybe if enough people knew, if enough of us did something, then the Sudanese could get the help they need.

I think it's even sadder that this isn't the first time I've read about atrocities such as those committed in Sudan. So many times throughout history genocide has occurred, often to the knowledge of other countries, including America. It's tragic that our country won't help fellow human beings in their time of need. I can only imagine if I was in a situation such as the poor people of Darfur. I'd hope and pray for help, someone to intervene and stop the chaos.

It seems natural to me that one should want to help another when it is needed. What lapse of moral judgement allows people to overlook such awful occurrences? I don't know how politicians sleep. America is the richest country in the world, yet because humanitarian efforts yield no monetary gain in countries such as Sudan, or Rwanda, or Cambodia, we can't be bothered by their suffering. Meanwhile, our citizens are far too engrossed in fighting for the right of one man to marry another, or a woman's choice to abort an unwanted pregnancy. It's wonderful to have the leisure of concern only for things of which have little meaning.

...now, I'm ranting. I shouldn't be so harsh. It would be a much more constructive use of my time to focus on the solution rather than the problem anyway.

It always stuck to me. I started to read Gandhi's autobiography, and although I never finished it, it truly resonated with me when he conveyed that helping others was the only way to find happiness. I believe it. I hope that doesn't make my motives selfish.

I'm so small.
