In this day in age marriages are quick and last from minuts to only a few years. It makes you wonder whether or not marriages will last until death do you part.
Sunday, I was given an assignment from my editor at the paper to cover an annual event that revolves around everlasting unions called The Golden Anniversary Celebration.
Amazingly close to 90 couples that have been married for 50+ years attended the event.
Many couples were recognized for milestone achievements including two couples having celebrated 75 years of marriage. And others were recognized for the most descendants the first on the list had 52!!!
I went around and talked to many of the couples asking them how they became successful in marriage and majority said that they agree to disagree, compromise and never going to bed angry. The most popular for men was the wife is always right and do what she tells you to.
I also asked them what they would advice they would give to younger married couples. Many stated that they need to work hard for the marriage and communicate with each other. One man advised to be financially savvy, saying that it was one of the reasons many get divorce.
"Work at it 365 days a year." One lady advised.
It was amazing to see so many couples that were still together in their golden years. Living in a world full of divorce and major marital discord makes anybody pestimistic of the future married life.
I'm not married or engaged but I can only hope that my future marriage will last as long as those gathered at the celebration.
