 Cyber-Bullying
Earlier this week I went to a presentation at a local high school about cyber-bullying. I was there to cover it for the newspaper.

I knew about cyber-bullying before but I didn't know the extent of it. The speaker told the freshman a few known cases where teens were the victims or the perpatrator of cyber-bullying.

We all probably remember the case of Victoria Lindsey, the cheerleader who was lured into a friends home and then beaten by six girls, the recorded beating then appeared on youtube. The girls and two boys were charged with battery and kidnapping. Victoria has ongoing vision and hearing problems.

Another case of a 13 year old boy in vermont was continually bullied through face to face and cyberly. He ended up killing himself. After his death his father went through his internet conversations and found them disturbing. A girl at his sons school pretended to like him online but bad mouthed him in public.

Not to mention Columbine and Virginia Tech shooters. There were so many other cases where people were being victimized through cyber-bullying. I learned that cyber-bullying can be more traumatic than face to face bullying.

In my Dark Days I regularly visited a Depression Support chat room on Yahoo. There were a number of jerks in the room that constantly attacked the vunerable roomies that didn't have a lot of self-esteem or confidence. I usually fought with them, to help blow off steam after a trying day and it helped.

But in the end they were just cyber-bullies who they themselves have no self-esteem so they attack others to make themselvesĀ feel better.

The biggest thing about the presentation was BEING CAREFUL OF WHAT YOU POST. What you post could harm yourselves or others, and you can never take it back.

Another topic was what the media call "sexting." It was important topic, you should never share nude pics with anyone. You never know where they may end up.

When a boyfriend/girlfriend share a photo and then break up later 90% of the cases that photo makes its way to many.

It was a very imformative presentation. Be careful with what you post!

Have you been a victim of cyber-bullying? Have you cyber-bullied someone? Do you know of other cases of cyber-bullying that has made the news?

Yes, I've been cyberbullied big time.

I had on my myspace that I lost my dad to cancer, and this guy who seemed to develop some kind of psychotic hate-on for me used it against me in a pretty horrible way. I didn't think something like that would ever be used against a person, but. Unfortunate for me I ever ran across this jerk. I hate him.

I don't doubt that you hate him. I'm sorry for your loss. People can be mean spirited. It usually means they hate themselves when they bully others. Cyber-bullies should be ignored unless their threats are threatning to your life or others.

I have never been personally attacked by cyber bullying but i know that the victims do sometimes end up killing themselves. I hate when people are such Pussies and attack people throught the internet and wont do s*** to the persons face.

It is sad that many end their lives after experiencing years of bullying. The Bullies really are just big cowards.

Your right. The Bully usually has No sense of self esteem. The only way they can elevate themselves is by stepping on others to do it. It used to be that kids understood that and had some healthy immunity. But today there is greater concern for what peers think rather than adults in a child's life.

There is no substitute helping kids grow up with a sense of their value to the adults in their lives. I think that is the immunity conditioning they lack.
