 First time “ABROAD”
Although I had been to the United States, my age at that time (I was only 7) and the lack of vivid memories, left me feeling that it was just a dream. Technically, my trip to the United Kingdom, well it wasn’t really a trip trip since I was going to be there for the next one and a half year, was the first time I consciously would be leaving India, and that too on my own! Excitement, anxiety, and stress is all I can remember when my parents and friends came to see me off at the Ahmedabad International Airport. Surrounded by the familiar faces, all I could think of was, “oh my god!”. The only things I was concerned was that I had to keep my passport and tickets safe. Watching my mom disappear as I went to the check-in lounge, made me realize the real scale of my undertaking. I wasn’t going to see them, touch them, be with them for an entire year, and more! For a moment, I felt like fleeing out of the airport and just going back home…but then came the realization, and the responsibility that came with it. I had already registered for my masters at the University of Edinburgh, and more so, paid my fees! Adding to that was the whole status issue, my parents would be so disappointed if I just came back…I couldn’t do that to them, to me.
And so I boarded the flight, all alone…and a bit scared too. The flight was another fiasco. For the entire eight hours, the Air India, Boeing, shook with heavy turbulence and I heard some of my neighbors ask the stewardess if we were going to die!
Finally, after what seemed as ages of driving on bad roads, we landed at the Heathrow International Airport, London. As I came out of the scary plane, I was amazed at the size of the terminal (it just went on and on). I actually had to get on the escalating tube to get to the gate, for checkout, immigration check and baggage claim. As I came out of the terminal gates with my trolley with two humongous bags, (my mother thought I would never come back so she packed and packed and packed), thoughts of my life in a new country, a new place overwhelmed me, and I began scouting for a cab.

(to be continued…)
