Well, its time to add another “ban” to the list. Not only have schools in the UK banned lunches from home; they’ve banned cheese too. When will people realize that they’re harming these children? Here is the article; see for yourself.
Schools in Plymouth banned from putting cheese on jacket potatoes
By Richard Smith 23/07/2008
Thousands of schoolchildren were yesterday stopped from eating cheese on jacket potatoes for lunch. Education chiefs ordered all 17 primary school canteens in Plymouth not to put the topping on baked spuds in a bid to improve pupil health.
The city council claimed it had been forced into the ban in a bid to meet new Government nutrition standards. But parents - blasted the move with local mum-of-two Jenny Long, 28, saying: "It's ridiculous. If things are used in moderation you don't need to ban anything.
"Cheese is a natural product and it's a bit odd of the council to dictate whether our kids can have it on a potato. The British Cheese Board also blasted the veto - saying it contains nutrients such as calcium and vitamin A.
A spokesman said: "They should cut out junk like crisps and fizzy drinks instead." But the council said it had acted under new guidelines set by the School Foods Trust.
My guess is that they’ve decided to “ban” cheese because of its fat content but take a gander at this excerpt that I took straight from the 2005 Dietary Guidelines:
• Children and adolescents. Keep total fat intake between 30 to 35 percent of calories for children 2 to 3 years of age and between 25 to 35 percent of calories for children and adolescents 4 to 18 years of age, with most fats coming from sources of polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids, such as fish, nuts, and vegetable oils.
A large group of Scientists, Doctors, and Nutritionists got together, did their studies and the government deemed their findings to be the standard. Stated right there in black and white! Children should have a fat intake of between 25 and 35 percent of their total calories; total calories being at least 2,400 for active children. And there you have it Ladies and Gentlemen.
People are going about this “Obesity” thing the wrong way; we should be eating a balanced diet of Vegetables, Grains, Dairy, Protein, Fruits, and Fats. The problem is what people are doing, not what they should be doing. People are cutting out all fats, all sugars, all sodium but the truth of the matter is that your body needs those things in order to function, as it should.
If you’re worried about becoming fat or you want to lose weight you should slightly decrease your caloric intake, without cutting out major food groups or starving yourself and you should moderately increase your aerobic activity whether that means taking the stairs instead of the elevator or walking a mile instead of around the block or even running five miles instead of two. Make sure you’re drinking plenty of fluids; I recommend Gatorade or Powerade, something with electrolytes if you sweat a lot like I do so you don’t get dehydrated. Make sure you stretch before doing any sort of strenuous activity because you don’t want to injure yourself (trust me I hurt my back last summer at work).
Be smart, don’t deprive your body of what it needs to function. I’m sorry if I’ve wasted your time but if I’ve made any sense to you at all, please spread the word. We need to stop this before it escalates.
