| The Witch the Dragon Fears
There is a Dragon that works for our sister company. Everyone fears him. He calls people to breathe fire upon them. He whips out vicious emails with the flick of his Dragon tail. He strikes fear in the hearts of thousands. At the mere mention of his name people tremble. The masses bow down to him in blind unison.
For all of his fire and steam I am afraid the Dragon is a complete idiot. I have had an exchange with the Dragon only three times. Once we negotiated deal together that I felt ultimately served both of our purposes. Once the Dragon sent me an email that was missing important information. I politely sent it back to him- for him to fill in the gaps. And once I did have a small battle with the Dragon. I didn’t think it was that big of a deal. The Dragons small side of the job was to take 10 business days. My side of the job which was considerably more detailed was to take 80 business days once his small 10 day job was complete. He screwed around for 75 business days- and wanted me to have my 80 day job finished- in 5. I taught him basic math. (I still finished my half in 5- but I tore him a new one for my personal satisfaction).
Today I was talking to one of the girls in our main office. She works with the Dragon on a regular basis. I told her I felt sorry for her- she had a difficult job. She laughed. She told me that the Dragon had admitted to her in strictest confidence that he was afraid of ME- and would never email me or call me again….because I was mean.
I laughed and told her that I ran out of nice in 2005. After we hung up I started thinking. There seems to be a pattern developing here. The people in our company that strike fear in the hearts of everyone around them- are afraid of me. It has been a problem I have dealt with my entire life. I look unassuming. I look like an easy target. Big green eyes, hair in pigtail braids, giant dimples on each side of my mouth. I am 5’5” barely. I have an extremely quiet soft spoken voice. People assume that they will be able to roll right over me.
A strange thing happens when I encounter a bully. I do not blink, I do not move, I do not back down, and I never ever get tired and give up. I will stand and fight until Hell freezes over. I am not so sure that this is a good quality. The people that are close to me, the non bully people, will look at me and smile with their eyes sparkling as if they are looking at something funny. Like they are looking at a cute little Pomeranian that has just ripped out the jugular of the town oppressor- and then looks at everyone around her as if to say “what??”
