| A salute to Mildred Perez |
|
Indeed honesty is the best policy. I came across on the news today, regarding a Filipino OFW named Mildred Perez, a native from the province of Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines who has displayed honesty at its highest level. She works in Hong Kong, but in 2007 she filed a law suit against her employer for sexual assault, thus leaving her with no job as of this time. It is Hong Kong’s policy not to allow or employ any foreigner while there is a pending court case. She has thought of going back to the Philippines but due to money constraints she could not. She was hopeful that she would win the case and eventually be able to have a decent work and support the needs of her family and send her children to school. Being a jobless, she can hardly support even her basic needs. She has indulged in scavenging in order to survive in a foreign land. In one of her scavenging days in Hong Kong she saw an envelope containing $176,000 and some checks, if converted to Peso, all in all that would be 2.1 Million Pesos, and that is a lot of money! The money was more than enough for her needs and her family, but the honest woman did not entertain those thoughts, instead she immediately looked for the owner of that cash. She was so selfless that all she was thinking was to return the money to whoever lost it because that person might lose his job for negligence, and she knows by experience how difficult it is to be jobless and broke. She successfully returned the cash, and guess what she got? She received a can of biscuits. She was actually not expecting anything in return, but was so thankful then because it will save her for days. Her townmates found out of her heroic deed and were all proud of her. Thus, Congressman Padilla, the mayors and other government officials in her town have join efforts in pursuing a resolution, pooling funds to support her and her family. Her honesty and how she managed her life despite all the hardships and conflicts in life was an inspiration to all of us Filipinos. She did not give up and remained faithful to God and kept her values intact. Surely this will be her legacy.
