hehehehe! i know its pretty hopeless, lol!
I hear the song, but keep substituting various different lyrics in to see if they work...
I think at this point I've written, like, twelve different versions of the song in my head...
none of which seem to be "the one"
that's a good idea about those websites though, thanks :)

Obamah and race on 2008-03-16 13:31:50 |

Exactly!
What strikes me... is how often I hear Obama speak and he expesses how he sees things can change and how it is ultimately our responsibility to change it...
But when I hear Hillary speak, she seems to take up so much time talking about how she thinks Obama "isn't ready"....ummm....so how is that going to help us as a country? what wisdom do you seem to have on the subject? And I just don't hear her able to offer those answers because she seems to be more interested in tearing others down...
also...it is very interesting to me that people are so unwisely pulling the "race card", while few to no quesions are raised about the large amount of Hillary supporters that say, "I just want a woman in the white house" !!!!!! We should be saying..."I want someone WISE in the whitehouse!"
no matter their sex or race!

So. You are saying he should leave a congragation he has been a part of for the past twenty years, for statements, now let's clarify this, that NOT his Pastor said but that someone that his Pastor's daughter gave an award to in-context to their efforts in rehabilitating criminal offenders. She did not give him an award for being and anti-semite. And even with that Obama has made clear his stance on this.
"I decry racism and anti-Semitism in every form and strongly condemn the anti-Semitic statements made by Minister Farrakhan. ... I assume that Trumpet Magazine made its own decision to honor Farrakhan based on his efforts to rehabilitate ex-offenders, but it is not a decision with which I agree."
Now, concerning his ACTUAL Pastor Rev. Wright, this is a portion of what he has to say for himself in a responce he sent to the New York Times article that helped fan such "concerns"
"Your own question to me was, Didn’t I think it would be incredible to have somebody in the Oval Office who not only knew about Muslims, but had living and breathing Muslims in his own family? I told you how important it would be to have a man who not only knew the difference between Shiites and Sunnis prior to 9/11/01 in the Oval Office, but also how important it would be to have a man who knew what Sufism was; a man who understood that there were different branches of Judaism; a man who knew the difference between Hasidic Jews, Orthodox Jews, Conservative Jews and Reformed Jews; and a man who was a devout Christian, but who did not prejudge others because they believed something other than what he believed......Out of a two-hour conversation with you about Barack’s spiritual journey and my protesting to you that I had not shaped him nor formed him, that I had not mentored him or made him the man he was, even though I would love to take that credit, you did not print any of that. When I told you, using one of the Jewish stories from the Hebrew Bible as to how God asked Moses, “What is that in your hand?,” that Barack was like that when I met him. Barack had it “in his hand.” Barack had in his grasp a uniqueness in terms of his spiritual development that one is hard put to find in the 21st century, and you did not print that."
I'm sorry if I'm coming off as combative...I am just so incensed by individuals who are making grand judgements on very little research or even-minded concideration. For example. Muslim. Is not a Religion. Islam. Is a reliogion. And much like their are diverse dinominations making up Christianity, all is Islam is NOT violent. I suggest you do some research concerning Suffism, if you would like to make such agruments from a place of enlightened awareness concerning the topic you are so bluntly blanketing.
Most of all, I do want to thank you. You are getting a dialogue going, and obviously thinking about your responsiblity as a citizen. And that is truely commendable. And appreciated be me, personally. Even if we may have some diferances in our point of view.
Once again :) please forgive any of my misspelling :)

ok. To clarify though, he isn't muslim.
He wasn't raised as a devout muslim. Think about how many people who go to catholic schools that aren't catholic. Think about the things that the IRA has done. Yet, We don't associate all catholics (such as myself) with being terrorists. This is because we have a high enough and visible enough population of catholics that we are able to discern, "hmmmm...guess they don't all hate protestants and english people" Well the same goes for Islamic people. Even in Iraq. We just have only experianced the bad, and haven't opened our eyes to the possibility of good.
Iterestingly, I can also identify with the reality of being raised Christian (catholic), and now, having explored my personal relationship to the eternal, I can appreciate many things about my ubringing and apply them to my current life, yet still, as an independently thinking person dissagree with and see the negative in some of the things preached within the church I was raised, or even in the points of view of people that I seem to have the same "belief system" as.
Obama has clearly stated his personal condemnation of the anti-semetic statements that Farrahakan has made, just as I condem the statements made within the church concerning the "sin" of homosexuality.
Yet, even as I sit in church listening to a sermon, i do not follow blindly, nor do I "condem" a whole person, given that I alone am not God. And if I did, I would be on the same level of the person whom I was "condeming" as a whole.
Knowing that, and living that,
is wisdom.
And my best friend, who is gay, never once assumes that I am a homo-phobe, if I go to church and hear such things. Because he knows me, through my words and my actions. He knows me for the the love and wisdom in my heart.
The flaw in our current reliogous and social system lies within the connection between seeing all people as lemmings and propergating that belief, and in believing that in order to have "faith", one must be one.
Through the words that Obama has written and spoken, and in his personal actions: This is something he seems to clearly understand. And such wisdom is THE difining hallmark of true and unwavering character.
please pardon my spelling in this :)
and thank you for opening such a dialogue :)

What does being a Muslim have to do with reflecting on your character poorly? It is such a stereotypical fear.
Listening to opposing views and having a history of diverse experiance only strengthens one's character. And the only true reflection of one's own character are their own words and actions. If you used your manner of measuring character as a rule, that would make Jesus himself an example of "bad character", having associated himself with the gambit of unsavoring and undesirable characters. But we do not concider him such, because we held him accountable for his own words and teachings, and not anyone else's.

Putting Country Above Self on 2008-03-05 17:45:03 |
|
Excellent. Excellent! Point.
I agree with you...and I also believe that the only way we are going to see change in this country is if we all understand that no one candidate can accomplish this. It requires each person to reasses their role as "citizens" of this country and make active changes and, yes, some sacrifices, on a daily basis. That it is our responsibility to educate ourselves and "be" the change we would like to experiance in this country as a whole. This is in contrast to the peviously thought, "vote and then go home" mentality, that leaves people wanting leaders to make changes FOR them in washington...
