I was just reading an article on http://www.msn.com about a girl who hung herself after meeting a boy online who turned out to be totally fake, and was simply a hoax to see if the girl was talking bad about the people who made the hoax's daughter. It's really rather depressing to read those sorts of articles, and it goes back to a Gobal Perspectives class I had today.
We were all sitting there, and Ms. Johnson decided to go to http://www.CNN.com, to do a simple, yet effective study on what sells in the media.
We had a | Positive| column, a |Negative| column, a | What? | column (for the stupid things) and a | Neutral | column for the things that didn't fit anywhere.
It came out like this: | 5 | 16 | 2 | 3 |
Rather startling numbers when you think about it. Maybe if we all read about happier things instead, not all this negativity about murder, death and so on, a little bit less of it would happen.
There is a flip side to that however.
There is also arrogance, an example is the cyclone that hit Bangladesh. We can't ignore that, in any way. So many people died, I don't see how so many people that I asked today didn't know that a cyclone had even hit some place, and even fewer knew the name.
Another incident, a rape that occured in Saudi Arabia! The woman and her male friend met up in some place, and a gang of men kidnapped both of them, and raped the two of them. These men were given 10 months - 5 years in prison, and the woman that was raped was to be given something like 90 lashes. When she spoke out to the press, her lawyer was stripped of his license, taken away from her, and her sentence was brought up all the way to 200 lashes! SHE WAS RAPED. Why is she being punished? Because apparently she should have gone with a chaperone.
I am so fed up with some parts of the world right now, and how they are handling things, mostly my own. Is there anybody seeing this from my point of view who understands why I'm so mad?
