I posted this article Sunday, but for some unknown reason the site deleted it. So here is my article from Sunday.
Wyclef Jean, a Grammy-winning artist and former member of The Fugees, recently used a radio ad as an appeal to Haitians to end crime and strive to improve their country. The ad, sponsored by the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Haiti, hopes to eradicate crime by using a native Haitian celebrity spokesperson. In the ad, Jean said, "If you love Wyclef, that means you love Haiti. So you should not be raping women, kidnapping people and children, because there can be no excuse for doing so."
Fred Blaise, a spokesman for the U.N. police, says that Jean's popularity in Haiti could be a positive influence on Haitians to stay out of trouble. Blaise said, "All kinds of Haitians, the good guys as well as the bad guys, have a lot of appreciation for Wyclef for what he represents as a Haitian."
According to the Los Angeles Times, Haiti is the poorest country in the Americas. U.N. authorities have been trying to combat kidnappings and other crimes committed by gangs. There were 36 people kidnapped for ransom in Port-au-Prince, Haiti's capital and largest city, during March and roughly 30 in February. These startling figures demonstrate the urgent need for a change in Haiti.
President Rene Preval of Haiti appointed Jean as a roving ambassador in 2007 to improve the image of Haiti abroad. Jean's Yele Haiti Foundation promotes the arts, education, and sports in an effort to bring economic development and jobs to Haiti.
Wyclef is sending the right message to Haitians by promoting the necessity for change. Celebrities have a moral obligation to make a difference in the world for the sake of humanity. They have the ability through their prestige and resources to reach millions of people throughout the world. Wyclef is taking an active role in helping Haiti overcome its problems and become a better place for future generations.
