Sean Levert, former member of the 1980s trio LeVert, died at age 39 while serving a jail term. A judge sentenced Levert to one year and 10 months in jail last week for not paying $89,025 in child support. Frank Miller, the coroner, said that Levert died at Lutheran Hospital in Cleveland less than an hour after he arrived at the hospital.
Cuyahoga County Judge Nancy Margaret Russo said that a presentence report confirmed that he smoked marijuana from age 14 until recently. Although Levert did not speak at his sentencing, Russo says that he did not look like he had any health problems.
The autopsy completed today shows no immediate cause of death. Powell Caesar, a spokesman for Cuyahoga County’s coroner’s office, verifies that there was no evidence of trauma or foul play. Levert suffered from high blood pressure and experienced hallucinations while in jail. Warden Kevin McDonough said that guards kept a close eye on Levert because he appeared to be sick and had been acting strangely.
His brother Gerald Levert died in 2006 at age 40 of an unintentional mix of prescription medications and over-the-counter medications. Sean Levert performed at the memorial service for his brother at Public Hall in Cleveland on Nov. 17, 2006. He was in the process of trying to reincarnate his group Levert and found a new third partner last year.
It is a shame to see another great musician die too young. However, his R & B trio, LeVert, accomplished many musical feats that many current musicians dream of achieving. Their song “Casanova” received a nomination for a Grammy in 1988 for best R & B performance by a duo or group with vocal.
