 Shomrei Adamah Day
Hey there SLC’ers!
Another amazing week here at SLC is coming to a close! This week saw the return of an old SLC favorite, “Shomrei Adamah Day (Guardians of the Earth)”. The theme of this year’s Shomrei Adamah Day was “K’vod Ha Briyot (Honoring Creation). Through generous support and funding from the JCCA and Legacy Heritage Fund’s Days of Caring and Sharing we were able to experience hands on, the miracle of creation.

Campers were treated to a hands on animal show, a tour of the Topsy-Turvy Bus for a discussion on alternative energy, learned songs singing the praises of being environmentally conscience, they made banners representing the days of creation, made solar ovens and even baked cookies in them!

The second part of the day was full of direct service as our campers honored their beautiful surroundings with Tikkun Olam (healing the world) projects. Groups cleaned and beautified our nature trails and overnight sites, they refurbished our recycling bins and created signage to support our recycling program, they painted a “Days of Creation” mural at the Teva Center and even helped to plant new gardens around Teenside. Two of our units, Work Program and Sherwood, even got the chance to live the Jewish Value of “Hachnasat Orchim (welcoming strangers)” when they took a bus ride over to our newest neighbors at Eden Village, a new Jewish camp in the area dedicated to Jewish Environmental learning, and helped out with some weeding and gardening.

Each unit in camp also participated in an environmental audit where they walked through a unit and checked for lights that were left on, leaky faucets and other potential wastes of energy and resources.

The day ended with a parade of the 7 days of creation at the Eddie Cantor Theatre, followed by a ruach filled concert with Channah Rothman and her band. The whole camp jammed to the beautiful songs celebrating our efforts to truly become “Shomrei Adamah (Guardians of the Earth)”.

Special thanks once again, to the JCCA and the Legacy Heritage Fund for their support in making Shomrei Adamah a day to remember!

As the first session comes to an end, I want to thank all of the session one parents for sharing your children with us for the last four weeks. We have truly enjoyed having them as part of the SLC family and look forward to seeing them again next summer. For those of you who are packing up and getting ready for session two, we can’t wait to see you and to share all of the fun we have in store for second session!

All the best,

Randy
