Concern Yourself
To Whom It May Concern (Meaning You):
Harmony Kate was a normal girl. Twenty-three years old and bright as the morning day’s sun. But not anymore, now she is alone. No one left to keep her company; no one left to care. No one left to love except for the soft, sweet voice of her lover. She loved life, almost as much as she loved him. He was always there for her, no matter what happened. And that made her feel so good inside, she would never spend a moment without him. It was love at first sight, and even now they spend every waking moment together.
But that is not why she is alone. She is alone because she lost her job, her house, and her family. She lost all of this because, well, her lover meant more to her than any of that other stuff. No one could ever even begin to fathom the relationship, nor the love between Harmony and her lover.
Now about her lover: well, he was a very interesting young man. Somewhere in his mid-twenties, he was tall, skinny, with dark black hair and a smile no one could ever refuse. The funny, happy guy in a group; you could never tell what he was hiding so deep down in his soul. Everything between the two of them was great, that is, until the accident.
One day on his way home from work, Harmony’s lover was hit by a drunk driver going down the wrong side of the road. He was in the hospital for months. Harmony visited him every day since then, even though he never answered, or even moved his head. But that didn’t discourage Harmony, she is a hopeful girl, such a hopeful girl that everything she does she pours her life into; hoping for the best out of everything. But sometimes it just isn’t enough. To the point where, what Harmony sees, and what you will see are two different things. Two different people. Two different lives.
I could never tell her myself, but her lover, is dead. But she doesn’t see that. She sees him walking with her, down the street… through the park… to the movies. He was her life, and he still is. Whether you can see him or not; he is still there… and she loves him. I don’t believe in ghosts, and neither does she. But he is there none the less. She talks to him, she holds his hand. They have conversations for hours on end about whatever she wants. If you ever saw it; you might feel bad… but more likely you would wonder why she was never committed to a mental hospital. Well that’s easy: she’s not crazy, just… in love.
People have tried to tell Harmony about her lover, but she is deaf to them. Anything that could ever discourage this ever hopeful girl is destroyed and forgotten before it even reaches her precious ears.
Love is a very powerful thing. So powerful it seems that even through death her love continues to grow for the one she loves so dearly. Death is only a heartbeat away, and to her, that heartbeat never came.
And you know, I don’t really feel bad for Harmony because honestly, she is happy. To the outside she is crazy; but I know she is happy… and in the end that’s all that really matters.
After the accident, she changed. Something about her was different. For the longest time I couldn’t figure out what it was. But now I know. Somewhere, hidden deep within her soul; her lover still lives. He lives in her, in her dreams, in her love, and in her heart. He has a form, he has a life. He lives forever inside the sweet, sweet affection and faithfulness that Harmony has shown year after year.
And this is what has brought her to be alone. Her utmost devotion and love has drawn her away from all the materialistic perspectives of life, and left her with nothing more than him and the scraps she can find in the garbage. But like I said before, she is happy; and that’s all that matters.
If you ever saw them together, you might be confused. Well honestly, you would be confused. How can you find two in one? Well, in her mind, there are two. She shares her breakfast with the man she loves; she shares her secrets and long walks through the park with him. After all these years, he is still the center of her universe. What more could you ever ask for from a girl you love, than for the devotion and care she has shown for him? That is why I could never tell her about him, about what happened to him. She would never believe me; and even if she did, it would tear her life apart. Happiness is the most wonderful gift life can give; and it is also the hardest to obtain. So why take that away from her? Why destroy what everyone yearns to hardily to become? She is happy, and happiness is a miracle no one can destroy. Not even God himself.
One day, when I came to visit her, she was sitting alone on a park bench in the middle of an open field. As I came closer, I could hear the ever on going conversation between the two. “You know, I love open scenery like this; it makes me feel so good inside.” A heavy, deep voice replied, “Of course I know that my love, I know everything about you; and I will always be there for you.”
“I know, I know. I am so grateful you got better after your accident; I am so happy that you are here with me. I don’t need anything else in life but you; and that’s what I have.”
Anyone but me would just stare and wonder; how could such a thing happen. How could a girl, so young, beautiful, and intelligent, spend her time on a park bench talking to nothing? But more curiously; how is it that someone, or something; replied to her. I can hear the voice, but I have never seen the body or force that creates it. And that is why everyone seems to think she is crazy. She responds to something that does not exist; to them, anyway.
What is existence? What does it mean to be alive? Is being loved, and loving in return not the true sign of ones existence? Love is an amazing thing; one capable of making or breaking a person; one like no other. To her, he exists in every way, to me; it’s all in her head. But either way, he exists in one way or another. Even just the sweet sound of her voice could bring him back. Her voice sounds like the song of a hundred humming birds, chanting to the same tune over and over. Her voice flows and travels through the winds like the most amazing sound one could ever hear… with the balanced beat of the trees floating together, keeping a perfect upward beat.
Alive or dead, Harmony’s lover is the luckiest man I have ever come to know. And I know everyone. I see everyone, walking their sweet pathetic lives; filled with material goods and glamour magazines; needing this and that to feel happy. She is so different from them; and that’s why she is so far from them. Everyone constantly downs her, they down the girl who is different, who is weird. They down her because she is strange. Because she doesn’t need the newest edition of “House Products for Dummies” magazine, or the Mary Kate and Ashley make-up to be happy. She lives her life simply; with love, and in the end… isn’t that all you need?
Material goods are just a replacement, a way to hide what you really want. A person missing something in their lives; instead of searching for it and finding true happiness; replaces what they want or what they need with a new car or a garden to occupy their time.
But this is a story about a girl who doesn’t need any of that. This is a story about a girl who can be perfectly happy with herself. All she needs is her love at her side; or in this case, inside; and she could live out her life without a problem in the world. This is a girl who you wish you could be. A girl in love. A girl who the world thinks is crazy. Is it so crazy to be happy? Is it so crazy to be devoted and faithful? If so, this is the craziest girl I have ever met. And I’m proud of her. If only you had the guts to meet her yourself.
Signed Sincerely,
The Little Voice in Your Head
