Read, dear readers read and never stop reading. It is consoling to know that readers are leaders but just keep reading even if you are not yet a leader and don’t see yourself becoming one in a decade from now. Read I urge you, read: for in it lays your salvation and your solution to every life’s trick and twists. Read, My brothers and sisters I urge you do not stop reading, just read, read, and keep reading.
I believed I would not have bothered to offer you this little piece of advice if I belonged to one of those born-with–a-silver-spoon kind of a person in my country. Thank the good lord I am not and that has made every little painstaking step I have taken in my life to better myself a worthwhile experience that I will cherish for all my life.
I have learnt from all kinds of person from when I was growing up with the realization that there was actually nobody out there for me except me! It is in fact a very healthy experience to grow up knowing that you are all alone and must at all times be on your guard watching your every move, every step, every thought and hope you don’t fall short of your personal demands and expectations.
I fall among that group of persons who have prided themselves to attend the school of ‘Hard knocks’. To this end, I have no apology and I strongly believed that every being deserved my kind of opportunity to begin his or her learning process as early and alone as possible. This is because when they are grown they would become as free as I have become to direct their life affairs as they choose. This is however, not saying I have the best of all options available to me. It is a great joy knowing that you do not particularly owe anyone for the direction your life has taken. You only need to thank books and more books whose simple demand on you is ability to be able to read whether you borrowed or bought it.
I am also not saying that I have the best of life-styles or have achieved a tenth of what I had set out to achieve. I am only saying that I see myself as being capable of reaching my life desires with my every little step drawing me closer to that which I longed for from a past and place I can not presently reconcile.
Similar circumstances made the celebrated English writer, George Bernard Shaw a great man though he confessed that ‘I never thought of myself as destined to become what is called a great man….’ It is not however, unconnected with his other statement ‘The fact that no one cared for me particularly gave me a frightful self sufficiency, or rather a power of starving in imagery feast…’
Life has assumed a beautiful meaning to me, suffering seems bearable when there exists no better option. Nevertheless, at all times I have discovered the trick of finding the right words, phrase or sentences from the right book to move on in spite of every other thing.
With the right book, a man need not wandered much on why life is the way it is and should have little else to worry. An answer to the mind bogging questions can be tucked away in the pages of a battered book most times sold in second hand bookstore.
George Bernard Shaw the great English writer found his solution in a book with the title, “How to live with six-pence a day” and for some time he lived according to the instructions of that book.
For you, an instruction, admonition or direction on what next turn your life may take might just be hidden in a book. Find it; make the best out of it and who knows your life can never be the same again; positively.
As we embark on this journey may we accept the prayers of Dr. Reinhol Nehbur that:
“God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change,
the courage to change the things I can;
and the wisdom to know the difference.”
Read my dears, don’t ever stop reading and you will one day find as I have and others before us that life is not only a story about others, it is our own story too.
