| What are we doing to our children?
|
|
|
I just read another blog that inspired this one. I have had these thoughts for years, but I guess the blog I read earlier just reminded me about it. I am the mother of 3 girls ranging in age from 11 to 1. I love my babies, and that is what inspires this blog entry.
What are we doing to our children? Have any of you noticed what we have made acceptable for our little girls? I noticed this phenomenon when my oldest was about 2. I went to buy her a bathing suit and to my surprise, there were VERY skimpy bikini's! This, I thought to myself, is ridiculous! Why would I want to dress my daughter like a swimsuit model when she is only 2! I brushed it off, bought her a 1 piece and moved along my merry little way.
When my daughter was 6 I took her to the store to buy some new underwear. We went to Wal-Mart, one of my favorite places in the world. I headed with her to the little girls section and b-lined it for the undies. To my amazement, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olson had a line of clothing for little girls that extended to underwear. Cute, right? WRONG! I was appalled by what I saw hanging there on the rack. Silk and lace panties, like I would wear for my husband, in a little size 6? I thought at first that it was a mistake, ladies panties in the wrong section, but NOPE! I could not understand, we were, after all, talking about Wal-Mart, who stopped selling CD's with parental warnings!
Sadly, this is not the end of my story. A few years ago, as I was watching my soap opera's, a commercial came on for JC Penny's. It was back to school time, and they were running their campaign for kids clothing. Fine, I understand. But then, this little girl, could not be more than MAYBE 7, jumped out of her seat and onto her desk. She then began "booty" dancing! What the F***!!!!!!! This little girl was dancing like some hoochie in a club! I was sooo upset by this that I started an e-mail campaign for everyone to write to Penny's and complain, sadly, it did not catch on.
Why are we sexualizing our children? Why do we feel the need for them to look like little midget adults? The Brittney Spears and Christina Aguilaria's of the world did not help. Posing for rolling stone in your underwear holding a teletubby.....
People, let your kids be kids. They don't need to wear clothes that you would wear, they should not be showing their midriff at the age of 4, and for the love of God, silky underwear should not be purchased for your child...EVER! They should buy that with their own money, and when they are grown. You do not need silky underwear if no one is going to see it! If you are reading this and have thought to yourself at any point in your life..."Are those thongs mine or my daughter's?" You are guilty! Think about what you are doing!
Kids are having babies, I know because I did, but this is now getting worse....younger and younger, 15 year old girls are popping out kids and becoming mothers, and you can't tell me it has nothing to do with the above mentioned phenomenon.
Sorry if I offend anyone, but just think about it. Let them be little, frilly clothes, cute dresses, tights, mary janes. Ribbons and curls are little girls, not bikinis and thongs.

What's worse is... they have children THONGS! I WOULD NEVER EVER buy Hailey a thong.. you have got to be kidding me!
It's so sad but there are so few wholesome kids in the lime light that I would want my daughter to view as someone to look up to. So it's up to me. I will be the role model for my daughter. Maybe if more people were like that - there would be fewer and fewer little girls booty shaking, wearin thongs and mid drift clothes.

It's sad and pathetic that this is what society has come down to.
It's alarming and it's very scary. I think there is something very wrong with the human psyche these days.
There isn't one good reason I can think of, to dress your CHILDREN in skimpy clothes...not one single reason.
This upsets me a lot because it seems so many people are obvlivious and walk around like zombies following "trends" and all of society's stupidity without thinking about it.
Thanks for posting this. Hopefully it will raise awareness.

I don't get into the children's dept often (yet!) so it has never really come to my attention as far as underwear goes and so on... that is RIDICULOUS!!! Insane!!! Unfathomable to me... even now... which I suppose is a good thing. WHAT would possess someone to make children thongs/"sexy" underwear.... It's bad enough with the clothing they are putting out these days for these young kids...
It is so very true that children nowadays are sexualized and at a shockingly young age. It gets younger and younger... kids having sex, kids "hooking up" as they say... even the way they dance... I was in line with my boyfriend at an outdoor ice cream parlor in the summer. In front of us were kids that I guessed were about 13/14? The girl had on a skirt that BARELY made it past her ass. She was with her mother too... I was absolutely horrified. I said "If I ever see my cousin (14 years old) wearing something like that... I will kick her ass. I'm 25 years old. Am I getting old, or am I just retaining sanity and moral's that I had growing up? It really is scary!!!

I couldn't agree with you more - and while my niece was getting her hair and nails done (yes acrylic nails) at the age of 11, I was appalled that my sibling would allow this to happen... it's no wonder that five years later, that same niece had a baby of her own!!!

What pisses me off, is when I go to a family gathering or a cookout. Everyone's having a good time laughing and dancing and doing the Electric Slide, and all of sudden you hear the ghetto cousin in the middle chanting," go Kiki, go kiki", as her 3 year old grinds her booty way down south.

Excellent post! Men AND boys need to learn to control themselves and their urges, but, mothers also need to be an example in teaching their daughters to cover themselves up and be a lady, EVEN in front of 'daddy' and 'brother/brothers'.

I have this fight all the time with Family members when it comes to my daughter and my son. My Brother lets his 3 and 6 year old watch friday the 13th and freddy movies, my son is 12 and my daughter is 10 and I wont let them. My brothers wife bought my daughter a bathing suit this summer, I could have sold it for dental floss... I told her to keep it that my little girl was not putting it on. Becuase I refuse to let my children do what thier cousin are doing, I am being called stuck up, have been told that I think I am better than they are. I told my brother, " Look when your kid is in jail, or your lil girl is meeting up with some 36 year old man when she is 13, call me and we will deal with it. But let me raise my children the way I feel is best."
My son and daughter keep buggin me about myspace page.... have they lost their everlovin minds. Maybe I am to strickt, but man I see what is going on around us, and it scares the crap out of me. I don't get scared easy, but when it comes to my kids, I can not help it.
