| Post Christian America? |
In a recent Newsweek article, the 2009 American Religious Identification Survey was cited as saying “the number of Americans who claim no religious affiliation has nearly doubled since 1990, rising from 8 to 15 percent.” It is an interesting piece of information, no matter what your affiliation – or “un-affiliation” as it seems to be. I have to say, that I am on the flip side of that survey, claiming through most of the ‘90’s that I was an atheist or at least Agnostic and now, today a Christian. I won’t subject anyone here as to what that means for me, I just find the survey interesting.
Isn’t it correct to say during any generation that the times we live in are “unprecedented”? It seems logical to me that the generation that will (or will not depending on your beliefs) follow us will be able to say this as well. So, I am not an alarmist or a conspiracy theorist by any means. However, I do believe that the correlation between Christians and Americanism are one and the same. Christians are largely patriots, which if any survey could be conducted on this I would love to see it…..I believe patriots are a dying breed. Americans are not viewed well on the world stage as a whole, and I can’t say that I blame some of the reasons, but I am an American and I love my country. If we begin to live in a “post Christian” America, then will those who are not Christian take over patriotism? Or will we just become a country of self haters and bigger government? I for one would like to see a lot less government in my life now, so I fear that this trend will just lead to more big government control in my personal bid-ness, but then again, that’s just me….
Okay something good! This is ‘Merica - free speech and free protest. Okay maybe it’s something to laugh at to say the least…but I give props to the students.
About 200 University of Maryland
students have watched clips from "Pirates II: Stagnetti's
Revenge." Last week, administrators axed plans to show the triple
X-rated movie, after a state lawmaker threatened cut off funding
for the school. Last night's screening was organized by students in
protest. They invited professors to join a discussion on the free
speech issues involved. Gail Baltazar, a 22-year-old senior, says
she found the sex scenes a little shocking. But she says she showed
up because she wanted to make a point about free speech.
