How well do you remember high school? Do you remember it like it was yesterday? Do you remember parties you went to, friends you were with, or teachers you had? I am 41 years old, and I remember friends from that time, I remember that I had fun, and that I lettered in wrestling and football. I remember a couple of girlfriends; I remember getting caught by the police having sex with those girlfriends (always had bad luck finding a private spot).
I ask this because the other day I ran into a guy who came up to me and called my name. His face was familiar but I couldn’t place where I knew him from. I played it off with a “hey man” , he then introduced me to his wife, and was telling her I was his best friend in high school, and about how crazy I was, and some mundane crazy stuff I did at some party, and that was the best time of his life etc etc. the whole time I am thinking: I don’t remember any of that, let alone this guys name. Then came the questions; what happened to so and so, have heard from so and so. Everyone he asked about I didn’t remember. Some of the names sounded familiar but I couldn’t put a face with the name. Then I asked about the ones I do remember, some of the guys from the football squad, the two people I actually considered my best friends. He actually had information on all of them, it was uncanny. I was running late we exchanged business cards, and I went on my way.
After seeing his name I kind of remember him now. He wasn’t part of the “click” I hung with. I guess you could say I was a jock and part of the “in crowd”, but not the stereotypical one you see in after school series. I got along with everyone for the most part, and could hang with any group or click, from the “geeks” to the “pot heads”. Basically I am saying I wasn’t an asshole. Any way, I kind of remember this guy was part of the Goth crowd, I think they call it EMO? Today. I don’t know why he said I was his best friend, actually that is kind of sad. Okay I am starting to ramble.
My point is or was, this happens a lot. I have had this happen before with air force buddies, work colleges, and ex girlfriends. I don’t know if its just me but when I move on I move on. I might remember major things from my past or funny things, but I don’t seem to put as much significance or weight into things as some people seem too. Don’t get me wrong, I care about things but when its over its over. Come to think of it I don’t really reminisce much. My ex-wife used to want to watch videos of past family vacations and I never wanted to, I figured been there done that. Is that wrong? Does that make me an ass? Lol. How do you remember?

I would have to say I'm the same way. My husband and I have a 10 year high school reunion coming up next year. He is stoked about attending his. As for mine, nope, I would rather not go. I haven't kept any friends from high school so for me it's a meeting of acquaintances talking about how things used to be once upon a day.
I think of life as a journey. Once things have happened, they've happened. Might as well move on to the next adventure.
The closest I get to reminiscing is flipping through one of my kids baby books. Even those are highly disorganized because I never spend the time to put everything in it's proper place.

At 46, I can still remember some significant things from back in the day, but most of it is kind of a blur. . .including names of people. There were some teachers that I really admired and I remember their classrooms and their voices and faces. I had a small nucleus of friends I've kept up with since high school. Until recently, I remained in the same hometown for over 20 years and for the most part everyone moved away. Within the past few years, I moved and started going to a church in a nearby community and have reconnected with some old friends from high school. It's funny how much some of them remember. They are constantly saying, do you remember this or that and I'll consistently have a blank stare as I'm lost in thought trying to come up with the memory.
