Here is a report I did when I was ten yrs. old, dated 9-21-71:
"The Incas"
The Incas first settled in Cuzco. It later became the center of their empire about 1200 A.D. Little was known until 1438 when Pachauti ruled the Incas. Pachauti was their ninth ruler. In 1532, the empire was spread over the area, from what is now called Quito, Columbia, to Santiago, Chile. That same year, a tiny force of Spanish soldiers conquered several parts of those countries, and it became a Spanish possession. In Peru, there are coastal deserts, the Andes Mountains, and jungles. Thirty main river valleys run through the coastal deserts. In the Andes Mountains, lived the Incas and other earlier civilizations. The jungles are next to the Andes.
Lord Inca was the head of the imperial court at Cuzco. He had many wives, often several hundred. However, he had only one queen; she was called the coya.
An Ayllu is a group of Inca families. They shared land, crops, and animals. The Purics are male workers between the ages twenty-five and fifty. The Purics were supervised by many higher authorities including Lord Inca. The farmland was divided into three parts. One part, the people farmed for the gods. Another part was for the government. And the third part was for themselves.
The Incas had no use for a money system. The people paid their taxes by working for the government. The system was called the mit'a.
The Incas number system was based on units of ten. They used a quipu for counting which is a string with knots in it.
The Incas built a complex system of roads. This and their efficient system of government were their greatest accomplishments.
