After being lost for three days in the Calif. woods, a whole family was found alive with their baby. Last Wednesday on CNN, each member of the family except the dad, while seated on a sofa, gave an extensive interview.
The children all said that they stayed warmed by huddling. They told a comical and interesting story of how it happened and how they had to abandon the Christmas tree they had found and cut down for their home.
When asked to clarify the purpose of their outing and why they went through deep snow in their car and on foot, the mother's son, Joshua Dominguez, said, "We had the tree, but we had abandoned it." Then, they couldn't find the way back to their car, after it started pouring snow.
To stay hydrated, the family got water by melting snow and dipping into a nearby creek. The other son, Christopher, said, "It wasn't fun drinking out of that creek!"
Times drinking out of a wilderness creek, when I was hiking as a child were some of the most wonderful moments of my life. I hope these kids do not shy away from this potential experience, because of their bone-chilling ordeal. It was a survival situation for them, and those circumstances are frequently unpleasant. Nevertheless, I want to remind the child within us to never shy away from such an incredible refreshment.
There is a risk of getting giardia, but I still recommend slurping crisp spring water from a forest creek, during warm days. I knew I could get sick, but I drank anyway, knowing to get ill was worth such astonishment.
