Fundamentals of Game Design Journal Entry 12
I played this global campaign thing in C&C3, and it was pretty fun. Basically you have a world map and a few bases. From each base you can build units and have them move around the globe, some units can build new bases allowing you continue to expand you influence on the globe.

It was interesting as you could engage in RTS combat when you attacked an other enemy unit or base. However I really thought that it coursed the game to take a lot of time and it sort of drags on. The focus was on world conquest but it spent too much time on the battles rather than the war.

So it got me thinking about what I would do, as it is quite fun. I would have a much simpler combat system, something that can be played in a couple of minutes, ten minutes at maximum. I was thinking something along the lines of a two dimensional battle field with a birds eye look, the whole battlefield fits on one screen. Buildings and units are represented as simple images – nothing to over the top fancy graphics.

So you can have you bases on the world map, have your units moving around then the units you have can be engaged in combat that will only take a couple of minutes and not destroying the speed of the game. It would also allow multiple people to play a game, you can’t have multiplayer in C&C3 as there are three teams and only two teams are engaged in combat at anyone time so the other player would have nothing to do for half an hour.
