| Fundamentals of Game Design Journal Entry 1 |
|
This is my first entry for the Game Design Journal assessment piece for ITB016. I’m not entry sure as to what I’m meant to say in this Journal, so I shall first explain what games I like to play and why I’m playing them.
I play most games, with the exception being sports games; however I find that I prefer action games and RPGs the most. I do like strategy and adventure games but I find adventure games have absolutely no replay value once it is finished and unless I’m playing against a human in a RTS then the computer AI is too stupid to be a good challenge.
I like RPGs for the character development and due to their heavy reliance on narrative, however most Final Fantasy style RPGs fall short due to their rigid lineal story line and frequent predictability. I like action games as running around blowing things up is fun, however they are also very lineal and can become repetitive if you have to kill the same enemy a countless number of times.
I suppose I like playing games for immersion, so in that sense I play games for escapism, I like nothing more than to just sit down and play a game and just stop thinking about the rest of the world (which has given me a very bad study ethic). I also play games for fantasy fulfilment, there are many things I would like to do but I can not frequently due to the laws of physics, damn them, and games allow me to do them. I like action games in that regard, in real like I can drive a tank or a mech, I can covertly infiltrate and heavily defended base and kill everyone in the space of a couple of hours but games allow me to do such things.
So this is the end of my first entry, I hope it’s not to incoherent for a sain mind to grasp.
