 John Mayer
It was a long time since I really got hung up on an artist, like when I was a teenager. But now I have had that sudden “crush” on a singer, simply because he is so unbelievably good. I am talking about singer/songwriter John Mayer, who has been around for the last six years or so, but whom I haven’t discovered until now. He is an American thirty-year-old who writes reflective, well-put lyrics and performs them with his band the John Mayer Trio. Before he had that band he was a solo artist, and that was when he made his name famous with songs as “No such thing” and “Your body is a wonderland”. The latter is rumoured to be about actress Jennifer Love Hewitt, who he dated at the time for writing the song. Since then he has been linked to Jessica Simpson, but that ended recently.
John is a guitar player and plenty of his fans claim that he is comparable to legends like Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. I just think that he is a great singer, and I waited eagerly for his tour to reach my town. When it finally did, I and a friend of mine immediately decided to book ourselves some tickets. When the date of the concert arrived we were really thrilled. Not too surprisingly, the show was spectacular. He really is as good a live artist as he is a record artist. The audience wasn’t as large as I had expected, but it was as supportive as anyone could ask for. He opened up with the magnificent “Something’s missing” and ended the whole show with “No such thing”, after having been applauded back onto the stage for the second time. In between he mixed ballads and rock songs in a really great way. The drummer and bass player was quite something as well! We were almost dizzy leaving the concert, and ended up at a pub with some other of his fans. We ended up spending the rest of the evening there, playing poker and discussing his songs. I must admit that my poker playing could have been a lot better, but I was so distracted by the John Mayer experience. After having had too many beers and played hours of poker, discussing lyrics back and forth I finally hit the bed at three in the morning. What an evening!
