 Urine it!
The title sounds crass but the idea is right on, just focus on the outcome, water savings, now say it fast... Urine it... you're in it.  I guess if you have to explain it it can't be that funny but hey, I'm a plumber not a stand up comic.  Okay class, today we focus on urine and how we can save water by not washing so much of it down the drain, well same amount of urine not as much water.  Ladies, unless your knowledge of a men's room is adequate, just relax and enjoy the read.  If you are in a position to implement any of what you read here let me know, many of the businesses I service employ women in decision making positions.  Men, the typical male mindset is that water is endless, pee and flush.  That is exactly what we are going to attack today.  Regardless of the morbid nature of the conversation, the fact of the matter is that conservation can be applied almost anywhere and if a technology warrants it, it should be applied everywhere.

Let's start with the common stuff, waterless urinals.  A technology devised years ago with the idea that no water is necessary to wash pee down the drain and into a sewer system.  Conservation concept- 100%, sustainability- maybe around 10%.  In almost every case where a water-free urinal has been installed, severe calcification (buildup,) has begun in the drain line.  Not that I mind getting called out for this, it is typically a very expensive process to clean up and guaranteed to generate repeat business.  In other words, they may make sense to some people to me they make dollars.

A typical reaction to "high efficiency" products is to simply mass market them without regards to their sustainability, waterfree urinals are not an exception to this rule.  The Arizona Senate passed House Bill 2276 that requires waterfree urinals to be installed in all state buildings in an effort to conserve water in the state that is consistently plagued by drought conditions.  Think of waterfree urinals in a plumbing system being similar to CFL light bulbs in a lighting system.  This means that yes, you are saving water, no, you aren't being as efficient as you could be with regards to sustainability.

What is the solution you ask?  Try looking int a company called EcoBlue, they have developed a technology that allows ANY STANDARD URINAL to be converted to a 99% water free unit for a more affordable up front cost as well as a sustainable solution, you will not have to call your plumber for regular clean outs in your men's room.  The foul odor commonly associated with waterfree urinals goes away,  the water waste goes away, the build up in your pipes will actually begin to clear up.  Your business will even have a placard at each stall announcing your commitment to saving water.  When you save water and do it in a way that also saves money and prevents issues in the future... That's smart.
