| The drawing board |
Evening, Imaginary Friend! I just heated up a pot of homemade broccoli cheese soup. Want some? It's great for chilly nights. *turns on coffee pot*
You've been at the drawing board again, yes? Tell me about your day. What song did you do the most work on? Do you still record like you did when you were with IRS--laying down the tracks in a couple of days, then spend the rest of the time remixing? How has your recording style changed? I think I remember reading that Accelerate was recorded simliarly to the IRS albums, but what about this record? Educate me, Imaginary Friend. I'm all ears.
Coffee's ready. Would you like some? Or perhaps a good old fashioned beer? *gets you a drink, then flops onto the couch, legs folded up*
I got back to the drawing board today too, Imaginary Friend. Only it was a literal drawing board. ;) I realized on Halloween that I hadn't painted a single thing in months. I painted one half-hearted image in June or July. Before that, I hadn't picked up a brush since January. There was no real reason-- I just hadn't felt like it. What got into me? Anyway. On Halloween I used one of my paintbrushes to apply my son's Halloween makeup (It turned out wonderfully!). I realized at that moment just how good that paintbrush felt in my hands-- I paint ambidextrously. It had been far too long since I'd painted.
Then last night, I got a very encouraging email from a real-life friend, the proprieter of a local gallery. She asked me why she hasn't seen me in a while, what's been up, and most importantly, am I still doing art. She said several other really sweet things.... she sweet-talked me back to my easel. Sometimes it has to happen like that.
*flicks dried paint off her fingernail*
So today I put on my painting music (Over the Rhine, Bob Dylan, a little R.E.M.) and painted. The result looks really amateruish. I am not pleased with it. But the process of painting just felt so good! I will start over again tomorrow. And I can't wait!
What is the longest period of time you've gone without making music? Did you feel out-of-sorts when you were music-less? Or have you done it so long that you welcome extended breaks?
I feel more rightly like myself than I have in a while.
*notices she forgot to put sugar in her coffee*
*does that*
*puts a second pot of coffee on*
But back to you. Let's talk about what's going on in the studio today.
