Evening, Imaginary Friend! *pours a cup of coffee* "pours in a little Irish whiskey*
Cuppa?
I am kind of put off by the celebrity obsession I see here in the US. Are our lives so unfulfilling and miserable that we have to bury our consciousness in the affairs of the rich and famous? I for one am sick of hearing about weddings and divorces, about red carpet outfits, who's sleeping with whom, and whether or not someone's losing their good looks at 50 years old. Who cares?
I'm starting to think that the fans themselves are the ones who push some famous people into acting ostentatiously. Or maybe it's the media. Or maybe it's their managers. Who knows. But the harder people press in on a celebrity, that celebrity eventually cracks. (Britney, Michael Jackson, Greta Garbo, Loretta Lynn, Lindsey Lohann, etc, etc.)
Yeesh, people! Do your favorite artists a favor and back off!
Imaginary Friend, when does the admiration of your fan base become more than just silly groupies, more than dedicated listeners? When does it become dehumanizing? What makes you feel less like a person and more like an object? Do people follow you around like paparazzi? (I almost spelled papa roach, ha!)
When people start acting like idiots around you, what do you do? Do you leave? Do you tell them to shut up and go away?
Unfortunately in my position, I am not allowed to tell jerky people what I think of them. I'm not allowed to tell people to go away or shut up. I can only smile and coo and pretend I am not bothered when someone pipes up with unwarranted criticism, commentary on my wardrobe, etc. If my life in the public eye is mildly annoying, yours must be purely hellish sometimes.
Commiserate with me, Imaginary Friend. Tell me all about it. I'm all ears.
