I too aspire to being a bum, I'd be happy as all hell roaming from ski town to ski town until I pull a Sonny Bono.

Sci Fi is also my favorite genre I recommend Larry Niven as a great read to any Sci Fi fan. He crosses the bridge between the "hard sci-fi" of Azimov and the "pulp/soft sci-fi" of say Lucas. He wrote a great essay on the difficulties involved with breeding the fictional character "Superman".
He was also one of the 1st to assume that 1st contact in deep space may not be peaceful in the 1st of the Kzin wars stories.
He was one of the Advisors on the "Starwars Space Initiative" that crushed the USSR under their own fiscal incompetence. His remembrance of it was that it had to be plausible but never needed to be practical as it was never intended to be deployed, rather just a feint to force the Soviets to commit resources that they didn't have to spare.
