I wonder how many of us are worrying about our futures right this second. People whose present isn’t all that rosy certainly worry about their future, but even people that seem to have their lives mapped out and have their “futures” taken care of worry about their future. Insurance companies have reaped a fortune playing upon the fears people have of their futures. We can plan all we want to make sure our future is taken care of, but nothing we do can account for all of the variables that make up what is going to happen to us.
It is the terrible fear of not knowing what is going to happen that makes us worry about what is in store for us. Thinking about all of the nasty things that could happen to us fuels the fear to the point where it affects our presents. It’s hard to enjoy the present while our futures are so uncertain. Sometimes I’m reminded of Jim Carey’s Fire Marshall Bill character. Fire Marshall Bill would show everyone what disasters could happen and in the process he would actually cause the disaster and get hurt. It’s slapstick humor and that is how we are living our lives if we fear what hasn’t even happened yet. That is how we are living our lives if we focus on what the worst case scenarios might be in any given situation. We are living slapstick humor if we “plan” our futures with the worst case scenarios in our minds and hearts.
Is the present truly so bad that we need to dream and plan for a better time? The present, right now this second, encompasses everything that our minds can imagine. All that has ever happened and all that our minds might think may happen is going on somewhere right now…right now…right now. The present is just that fast…right now. It comes and it goes in seconds. How bad can the present get in a second? Do we really need a future if the present comes and goes this quick?
If we deal with the situations of our presents as they happen with the thought in mind that this is our final stand here on this earth, I don’t think we would need a future, let alone, a need to worry about an uncertain future. If we deal with the hardships as if to rid ourselves of them and drink in our blessings as if they are our last breaths on earth, why would we need a future?
The next time the question, “What’s going to happen to me now?” comes to our minds maybe we should stop for a second and realize that one day we will die. That is our collective futures. We are going to die. All that we know will be gone…the good and the bad.
The future is an unsure entity at best. It’s a distant place. It’s an unfinished story. It’s an insincere promise. It’s hope for the faithless and light for the faithful. It’s the dreamer’s life and the schemer’s pay off. It’s an escape haven for those who do not follow their hearts and those that can’t justify what they have done in the present. The future is a fantasy land created by our minds to fend off the realities of the present.
The future is not something we should be afraid of and it’s certainly not something we should be worrying about. We made it up so we can at least imagine it to be something really really nice.

Good post Pauligan...I don't like thinking about the future, for it is scarey....But I just live the one day at a time theory and feel secure in that...

Thinking about the future probably takes a lot of future off of our lives, Sober.

It is the actions of us that determine our future.
It is how it will affect others that worries me.

I stopped worrying about the future.
It makes me miss today, or drown in the past.
Today is the only future we have.
So, how is your future?
