 Another Odd Wreck
Anyone that has read me for awhile knows that I have had a few strange car wrecks. I have already told the story of the train and the Volkswagen, so I thought I might tell you about another wreck. This story happened the next year after I had hit the train with a Volkswagen.

The summer after I had gotten out of High School I worked at a place that had government contracts to rebuild shell canisters for the Navy. It wasn’t a pleasant place to work but they did have one perk we all enjoyed very much; they would throw after work parties if we met certain quotas. They would set up a food table with deli stuff right there in the factory. I guess there are places that still do that kind of stuff, but I’ll bet they don’t have kegs of beer to go with it. They did at that place, and not only did they have beer, they also had champagne. As soon as the buzzer went off we all formed two lines; one to the food table and one to the keg of beer which is where I ended up going.

It was hot in that place and most of us were more thirsty than hungry, so for about forty five minutes we were just filling our glasses and getting back to the end of the line to drink on the way to refills. I did this four times. Now four beers in forty five minutes may not sound like a huge amount of alcohol, but when you add an empty stomach and a hot day to that, it turns into a pretty good buzz.

Before I could get any food in me a friend of mine that worked there with me came up and said a couple of girls we knew had showed up to pay us a visit. The girls didn’t work there, but they knew what time we got off and they came to do some partying with my friend and me. They wanted to go out and smoke a joint somewhere.

I didn’t have any pot, but my friend did. We hopped in my car and cruised around while he rolled the joint. We smoked that joint up pretty quick, so he rolled another one. I was feeling decent by this point and when I felt decent back in those days it had an effect on my driving.

I was kind of known for my crazy driving and the people with me knew me all to well so they wanted to see the crazy man in action. I’m an obliging kind of guy, so I thought I would oblige them. I proceeded to drive up on the sidewalks, race through alleys, and stuff like that, but then we came upon a grade school which I knew had a ball diamond around back. Since it was summer I figured no one would be around, so I pulled up in the school yard and headed around back to the diamond. Well, there was a ball game going on with little kids and parents everywhere. The route I took put me right onto the diamond before we realized what was going on.

I steered the car into the least populated part of the diamond…right out between the pitcher’s mound and home base. The pitcher, who was an adult, was furious and the Moms and Dads were yelling at us. The two girls in the back seat were freaking out and screaming, so I hastened my retreat to the school parking lot and back on the street. You would think this would have been enough for all of us, but everyone in the car, including the girls, wanted more.

Well, as you know, I’m an obliging kind of guy, so I thought I would oblige them. My friend said he knew of a place out in the country that had a dirt road with no people around to get hurt, so off we went to the country. We ended up on the property of the FOP club house. FOP stands for Fraternal Order of Police. I didn’t know at the time it was the police’s club house property we were on and I don’t recall if my friend knew that, but if I had known it I would have went further on down the road.

We got on the dirt road that my friend had talked about and off I went driving on a winding bumpy road that I had never been on like I had been on it a hundred times. I was fish tailing around corners and popping over hills. It kind of reminded me of a dirt bike race track or something on that order and that is kind of how I was picturing myself as I wildly went on my merry way. I saw a hill coming up so I threw my car into a lower gear and hit the gas. We popped over the hill and we just started bouncing around. I couldn’t tell where we were. We just bounced until I felt water all around me.

Apparently, on the other side of the hill were deep cut ruts in the road that led to a pond. The road went around the pond, but the ruts went right to the pond taking us with them. We had flipped upside down and entered the water roof first with the car. Being upside down, intoxicated, and in the water left us all slightly disorientated. I don’t remember seeing any water before we went in, so that only added to the confusion.

The car I was driving was a little four speed Opal Cadet, so there wasn’t a lot of room in there to maneuver around. My friend and I were actually battling each other to get out the window on his side. We made it out, but the girls were in a predicament. To get out of the back seat, you would normally have to unlatch the front seats and tilt the whole seat up, so the girls were more or less trapped in the car. One girl popped out almost immediately after me and my friend got out. All three of us climbed up to the bottom of the car and set on it. We looked around trying to orientate ourselves to the surroundings and we realized simultaneously that one of us was missing.

...to be continued...

We all change and mature from living and learning life's lessons, Newname. Being an upstanding citizen has never been a goal of mine, but now days my heart guides my direction. When this story took place, my nads (which are of normal size...I think) guided me. Needless to say, I have learned life's lessons the hard way.
