I would prefer the European Parliament be permanently based in Brussels.
The whole lot putting everything into trunks to drive to Strasbourg and the MEPs, assistants, Commission Officials etc. flying down there is incredibly bad in terms of CO2 emissions.
One might even say completely unjustifiable to do so just for the sake of the hoteliers and restauranteurs of Strasbourg. THe EU is no longer a collection of 6 countries to whom Strasbourg had post-war significance - Berlin (as in the fall of the wall) might mean more.

But the EP itself doesn't get to decide where it is based - that power lies with the Heads of State and Government from the Member States when they meet as the European Council. Seems that France considers it in its interest to retain Strasbourg and in negotiations at the Council this issue is never important enough to enough others to try to get France to concede. Umm, have I answered the right question? |
