| Obama Must Stand Up for Healthcare and Leave Afgha |
I have mixed feelings about calling the President out, however I do believe that he and his staff’s decision to begin the Healthcare debate without even considering the Single Payer option either shows that they were playing from weakness or they have been in the pockets of the Insurance Industry this whole time. I do not want to believe Obama has been bought and sold, but it is obvious that most of our Representatives in Congress are far more beholden to their corporate masters than they are the people who elected them. Of course when you have a population that pays little attention and a system that requires millions of dollars to run for office it would be nearly impossible for it not to be completely corrupt. So without making a choice as to whether Obama is being paid off for his lack of leadership on Healthcare or that he and his staff just have a lack of backbone and are more concerned with the appearance of change rather than real change, I know if he doesn’t do something he probably does not deserve to have all of our support. He needs to show the integrity and strength he showed on the campaign trail and stop cow tailing to his opponents. If he wants to prove to those of us on the left and the progressives that he is not just giving lip service to Healthcare Reform then he needs to come out and STRONGLY stand up for the public option, for without it all the other stuff will not amount to a hill of beans, except for continuing pilling of Insurance Companies profits.
The other massive headache for President Obama that is not going to go away and could eventually suck the life out of his entire Presidency is Afghanistan. A new poll today said 51% of the nation says the war in Afghanistan is not worth fighting. Even George Will came out today in support of getting our ground troops out of the country. Sec. of Defense Robert Gates said casualties will continue to increase as the war goes on. I say it is time to go. You can say we went there eight years ago without choice, because the people who attacked us were there, well they are not there now, and we should not be there either. We have no clear definition of what victory is, we do not have the money to build this country, and let us be fair, we are not talking about re-building Afghanistan because something would have had to have been build first and that place is the same now as it was 100 years ago and 1000 years ago, and it is no place to try and build a new nation now. I fear Obama wants to continue this war more out of fear of looking weak rather than a clear reason to continue it. We do not need soldiers in Afghani villages to keep America safe from terrorist. Like any reasoned person knows it will be good intelligence that leads creates our safety in the battle with radical Islam not foot soldiers fighting Taliban fighters who believe they are defending their land and their way of life. Every dime we spend in Afghanistan is another dime not being spent on our own declining society and it is time to worry about our massive unemployment rate, lack of new good jobs, and an ever increasing pile of new problems. So I say to President Obama how about some of that “Change We can Believe” in and not a repeat of Vietnam.
Now we come to the Philosopher of the Week, Noam Chomsky, who said, “Education must provide the opportunities for self-fulfillment; it can at best provide a rich and challenging environment for the individual to explore, in his own way.” I find a classic education very important in rounding out a human’s ability to understand the world they live in, and I fear we are heading ever more into people going to college just to learn a skill and not also to expand their horizons. Chomsky also wrote, “Everybody's worried about stopping terrorism. Well, there's a really easy way: stop participating in it.” He is right on for we have made more enemies than we have killed over the last eight years and every village we blow up and every Afghani and Iraqi family we terrify we are making a new potential terrorist. Well friends sorry about today’s late post, and until tomorrow goodbye…
